The Olympics are to hockey what the World Cup is to football. It's where all the best players in the world go to compete for their country once every 4 years and is more prestigious than the World Championships.

The world champs are a fun season-ending tournament in Europe but the North-Americans don't really care for it, at least until recently when a lot of the best available Canadians actually started accepting invites. The tournament is a great thing for growing the sport but winning it isn't considered a huge achievement unlike the olympics 1998-> and the previous Canada/World cups.
