I used to watch MLS when the red bulls were the metro stars since my dad took me to games but then I went to college and life happened and I stopped watching soccer but when NYCFC started I got back into it.

The other way was tried in the 1970s/1980s and the league literally died overnight when they expanded too quickly and tried to make all their money at once. The current system is working, is not expecting NFL-level profits overnight, but they recognize that soccer as a permanent US-fixture can and will take hold, and work, and make money.

This is why MLS will probably never have pro/rel unless the league collapses and has to reorganize.
Of course, that just means the lower leagues that are hungry to differentiate themselves have an opportunity to compete. USL seems content to be a minor-league feeder system, but once every city in America has a team in at least a semi-pro league, and MLS/NASL are expanded to the limits of scheduling feasability, then the non-MLS-affiliated leagues could go for a pro/rel system among themselves.
