Basically the original Heineken cup was set up by the Unions in order to give regular good quality sub Test level rugby for each nations clubs/provinces.
The French and English clubs turned that around and said the Celtic and Italian teams got easy entry into the competition. They conveniently ignored that the Celtic unions had to completely change the structure of their Domestic rugby in order to create these teams.
They came out with a load of bullshit about the competition being run poorly from a business point of view run in order to justify their takeover. The comp. doesn't make any more money now than it did before and its broadcasting set-up is now a mess.
Tin-foil hat on I think these lads have the long term goal of killing Professional rugby outside of England and France and making their domestic leagues the top level of rugby.
