The WNBA piggybacked on the NBA for a bit, with the local men's team kicking in money for the women's team, but (1) they lost plenty of money, and (2) some WNBA teams now operate on their own anyway, in their own cities.

The women made more money in 2015 because they had a major competition that people cared about. The men's team didn't make that much money because no one cares about the Gold Cup.
In years when the men have a World Cup, they easily outgross the women.
