I'm managing Palace in the premiership and I have a bunch of real quality young players on team friendly long term contracts. If I got somewhere around 30 to 40 mil wage/transfer budget increase in the off-season would it be better to acquire more players or invest that money into higher salary contracts for players I already have. I already gave most of them raises which they are happy with but I just want to be smart about this.

You can always find younger players who you will be able to develop better so really outside of a handful of phenomenal players you may already have you should just look to sign new players to fill in any weak spot you may have then invest the rest in youth and just get rid of anyone who isn't phenomenal that is bitching about improved contracts etc. Or just ignore the ones that complain, generally it just goes away and if their contract is coming up in 12-18 months you can just sell them.

the difference is that a GK getting an injury virtually NEVER happens. it's MUCH more likely that both my fullbacks will pick up a yellow card in an important game and get close to a red, and I'll have to sub them out. and playing a slow, sluggish, tall CB as a left back will definitely fuck your shit up and you'll literally concede 3 goals because of it, similar to playing a manlet fullback as a CB.
and even if I had to choose between having an outfielder in goal and 10 outfielders that can play their positions and having a red fullback/cb/defensive mid and a good GK, I'd choose the former any day of the week. if your team is not hopelessly bad then your GK has much less of an influence than your outfielders, having a defender that just cannot defend properly will mean lots of CCCs but having a GK that cannot save a ball can be harmless if you defend well

Press more, look for overlap, whipped crosses, use CWBs preferably but not exactly essential. I also use exploit each flank.
FM 16 is basically about creating as many situations where a winger/FB runs down the outside and crosses hard to the far post as possible, and stopping the opponent doing that as much as possible. 80% of goals in this years one are scored that way.

I find the vast majority of cards come from either angry shitheads doing THAT tackle or defenders trying to slow an attack down when you're caught shorthanded.
Basically, if you defend well, you won't get many cards no matter what kind of tackling you do.
I had a save where I specifically gave every outfield player the "tackle harder" instruction, and the effect was small, but all I saw was that we'd occasionally win the ball higher up the field and would give away a couple more fouls per game.
