Since Ayón arrived to the team I think that the team changed for the good. In general, he is the monster they needed for the rebounds. His physical presence makes him a good player to have below the basket.

tv rights, sponsors and half of their players' image rights. Until the recent banking crisis they also used to get special treatment from government controlled banks in madrid so they could basically have unlimited loans at almost no interest, like the ones used to sign ronaldo, kaka, bale, etc. but when the crisis hit they had to start selling players to buy new ones (ozil, dimaria, etc). They also got other help by madrid government, like some gifted terrains and shiet.

I think they have a bit higher revenue than barcelona but both clubs are quite close in both income (~500m) and declared profits (~30m). Barcelona has more sports teams (more junior teams) and sections (indoor football, handball, hockey, etc)
