They wanted to beat big bad alabama in some big bowl game for their crappy program. Of course they were going to play their hearts out. Meanwhile the exact opposite for bama was true. They were 1 game away from being in the natty and lost. A lot of the good players didnt even play and some were suspended, whatever. It happens every year. I'm not even confident in the rest of the SEC teams because the sec usually does mediocre in bowl season since nobody cares about the liberty bell bowl or whatever.
My wife's son's father played for Ohio State so it's why we are such big Buckeye fans. He doesn't come in town to see his kid much but when he does I always let the 3 of them go have a good time together.

Because a 1 loss Alabama is perceived as the #1 team in the nation still while a 1 loss Baylor and a 1 loss TCU are perceived as the #5 and #6 team in the nation. Why? Because they played Big 12 schedules and Bama played an SEC schedule, which is far more difficult, because the SEC is considered better than the Big 12. The reason the SEC has this reputation is their sheer dominance of the BCS era. It can be the difference between making the playoffs and being the best team on the outside left out.

In this same vein, I think the smaller bowls (but not too small) can be fun. I went to the Alamo Bowl for a couple years (except last year) and got to see Baylor with RG3 (after winning the heisman) beat Washington 67-56; I saw Oregon with Mariota (playing a year before winning the heisman) beat Texas in Mack Brown's last game; and I got to see some NFL talent before they were drafted, like Kenny Vacarro, Brandin Cooks, and some others.
Overall, they were pretty fun games to watch in person considering the players involved and the storylines, but it would have been boring to watch on TV I suppose.
