Two games have been altered because of ref calls, one at the Seahawks and the other with Packers. The Lions would be 6-6 if it weren't for those calls in those games. Is there a stats nerd here who can confirm that Tavon Austin has had more return TDs called back by penalty than anyone else in recent history?
And how many of those return TDs have been taken away on "questionable" calls?
I understand that would be a subjective "stat", but i'm not asking how many have been taken back on "boohoo refball bs" - I'm curious as to how many of those calls were considered "judgement" calls(i.e. a questionable hold, or a hold or block that had no effect on the advancement of the ball) that have legitimate evidence to support either side of the call in question, after the completion of the play.
Obviously, once the call on the field has been made(in regards to a penalty) it assumes ultimate authority in the situation and "it is what it is" - we all know 20/20 is hindsight because penalties are assessed in real-time and are non-reviewable in the NFL, but that doesn't protect them from critical analysis after the fact.
I have no interest in arguing whether or not those flags had an effect on the final result of those games; I am only interested in how those penalties have potentially affected Austin's personal stats.
Being a die-hard Rams fan I certainly face my own bias(as well as having witnessed all of Austin's returns while only seeing a portion of the returns made by players of other teams) but from what I have been able to observe, it really seems like Austin has had an inordinate amount of return TDs called back by penalty as opposed to other players in the league.
(Disclaimer: I don't doubt that STL special teams is at fault on the majority of these plays and I'm not intending to pass blame to the referees without evidence of possible errors in judgement)
