The sound you hear is from the off-throttle blown diffuser

http://www.somersf1.co.uk/2012/07/off-throttle-exhaust-blowing-in-2012.html

"Put simply when the driver lifted off the accelerator pedal the ECU continued to supply a small injection of fuel but cut the ignition, the net result is that the fuel still combusts due to residual heat but doesn't provide the same force it would if ignited. This results in an increased exhaust gas speed, effectively allowing a transition period whereby the driver isn't robbed of the rear downforce that the exhaust gases generate when the throttle is applied. - See more at: http://www.somersf1.co.uk/2012/07/off-throttle-exhaust-blowing-in-2012.html#sthash.lBQ8h9Dk.dpuf"

You were watching a BBC feed or saw it a video that used BBC commentary.

The BBC cut to Suzi and EJ. Eddie was joking around with one of his former Jordan mechanics (literally everyone in the paddock seems to be a former Jordan mechanic).

Please show me it from a Sky source.
>>
>>63638205
Blown diffusers can basically open or overlap valves when throttle is closed (braking) to push air straight through the exhaust. Late/extra gas or spark can be used (similar to antilag systems in turbos) to heat the bypassed gas and increase downforce.

Yes, you lose the mechanical engine braking effect, but you get that amazing sound and downforce.

At least you get something. In recent years Belgian TV broadcasted less and less, and since this season, nothing anymore. F1 is only available via paid TV. Luckily we get the BBC in a standard TV package. But since that will be cut even more...
tfw in 2017 we finally have a Belgian F1 driver who isn't total shit, and we can't see it.

Here in Brazil, Rede Globo is planning to end the broadcast of all races (they would only show the ones on sunday mornings, which comprises the European + Arab parts of the season) and relegate F1 to cable in 2017, because ratings are getting low. The occasional audience isn't giving a shit about it because races are boring as fuck and we have no decent driver (currently waiting for based Pedro Piquet to have a seat or Nasr getting a sweet upgrade to a nice team).

>£35 million will be saved from the BBC’s TV sports rights budget. Meeting this savings target will be tough, particularly given the high levels of inflation in the market. We therefore anticipate this will lead to the loss of some existing rights and events. We have already made some tough choices which have contributed to the savings, for instance around the Open Golf. However, we have also recently secured a series of important rights – including Wimbledon, Premier League highlights, live coverage of Euro 2016 and 2020 football championships and Six Nations rugby shared with ITV

Do you guys think Sky will try to pick up DC or any of the other BBC F1 guys?
>>
>>63650668
DC would be the only one they would try and pick up.

Lee competes with Natalie and Rachel for pitlane hottie (not to mention making Ted look like an idiot) and she is too loyal and isn't going to get swayed by Sky money. She will stay as a BBC sports reporter for other events like the Olympics.

Suzi is as good/as shit as Lazenby.

EJ with Herbert and Hill would lead to pure chaos.

Edwards is currently the best English F1 commentator by far but they aren't going to get rid of Crofty who brings in the casuals.

The BBC might not cancel their radio coverage so a lot of team might just move to that.
>>
>>63650668
I still would have loved seeing DC an JB on the BBC as a duo from 2017 onwards. The level of bromance would be off the charts. Even more so than DC and Jake back in the day

I think NBC's commentators are actually pretty underrated. I know I'll get flak for this but it's pretty comfy to wake up before sunset to listen to these three guys talking like actual friends. >Thoughts on Haas?
They have a good foundation that HRT, Virgin and Lotus all lacked in 2010, but their staff are spread across the US (where their design and manufacturing happens), UK (where their race prep happens and where the team will be based in the European season) and Italy (where their wind tunnel stuff and additional design happens) meaning cohesion between the three units will be minimal compared to that to the other teams who are based at the same place.

The team that is sent to the races will be undermanned and woefully lacking in experience, their race strategies will be more conservative than Williams could ever hope to be and in unpredictable conditions they'll panic and fuck up.

The car might be capable of a few points finishes but I'm unconvinced that it will be particularly good aero-wise; their chief designer is the same man who brought McLaren from race-winning to midfield and the assistance they're getting from Ferrari seems to be closer to exploiting a wind tunnel time rule to advantage Ferrari more than to help Haas get on their feet.

I'd be interested to see what design philosophy they go down; Ferrari don't really have one of their own, more of a "let's take what others do and simplify it", while most other teams are copying Mercedes. They could try and emulate Williams' low drag philosophy since no other teams are doing it but I doubt it would work for them.

their chief aero guy is someone they poached from Red Bull at the beginning of this year (and literally called Guru), so I think their aero next season will be very similar to McLaren's.

I doubt they'll ever be a front-running team but they'll have 4th in the championship in the bag and will have a decent shot of challenging Williams.

That said, the aero route Guru and Prodromou are following is very hit or miss - a single area that is lacking in downforce, or too draggy, will result in incredibly unstable airflow and make the car very inconsistent in how it handles. They inherited this philosophy from Newey but Adrian is unrivaled in eliminating that inconsistency while Prod and Guru aren't anywhere near that capable.

Screencap this post
>>
>>63657354
I sort of agree with this actually. I don't think Mercedes is that good of a team, they got lucky when their engine was so far superior to the others. Ferrari has closed the gap considerably and will only improve building the car around Vettel. I think it's going to be a very close battle between Ferrari and Merc

Williams a shit and were only so far up because of their engine

Red Bull still has the best design team IMO and if the Renault / Red Bull / Infiniti whatever it will be called PU can be relatively better than this year, they will be close to the front

The rest of the teams, who knows, but my guess...

1 Ferrari
2 Merc
3 RB
4 Aston Martin
5 Williams
6 Mclaren
7 STR
8 Haas
9 Renault

10 Sauber
11 Manor

Not necessarily. I mean, if the Renault is still shit, they could be close behind RB.

Plus, they nearly beat Macca last year when both had Merc engines. Maybe Honda will improve, but not nearly enough to match the Merc PU.
>>
>>63662825
red bull with a shitty engine are already faster than force india this year.

aston martin will have no effect on next year's car - and it may not even happen next year.

and isn't it just aston martin branding plus money? do aston even have money? i'm sure i read that the whole team will stay the same. this just seems like williams martini, but on a slightly bigger scale.

besides, the power unit is still going to be the standard mercedes one - just aston martin-branded. or so autosport claim.

it's worth remembering force india only employ 380 people.
>>
>>63660617
>Williams a shit and were only so far up because of their engine
which is why they were ahead of force india and mclaren last year and force india and lotus this year right?

williams only even outspends FI and lotus by 10-20 mil and has less than half the budget of mclaren

plus they completely stopped development of the fw37 after hungary, save for a couple of new elements in singapore, so they could focus 100% on the fw38 while force india are still bringing upgrades
>>
>>63662835
Oh awesome.

I'm going with some friends. This should be a neat finale.
>>
>>63662848
>red bull with a shitty engine are already faster than force india this year.
all indications are the 2016 renault, whichever version they use, will be worse than the 2014 and 2015 iteration. if red bull indeed do build their own ers system i don't expect it to be any better either, since red bull's only hybrid experience is with building their own kers for 2 years

>aston martin will have no effect on next year's car - and it may not even happen next year. and isn't it just aston martin branding plus money? do aston even have money? i'm sure i read that the whole team will stay the same. this just seems like williams martini, but on a slightly bigger scale.

Also, the Race of Champions this year is on an actual circuit rather than two lane rallysprint style layout.

they would likely still be behind this year even if hülk started in belgium and didn't have other accidents.

don't get me wrong, i really like the team. i'm just managing expectations. i only support them and williams. i stopped supporting sauber after the van der garde case.

>>63662860

red bull's aero team have shown nothing of promise this year. nothing. the only adventurous thing they did was copying merc's front wing. aside from hungary and singapore they haven't had any form this season, while if newey was still in the reigns their chassis would've comfortably taken a few podiums away from williams and ferrari. of course a lot of that is due to renault a shit but there's no indications that the power unit they choose next year, unless it's the 2015 ferrari against horner and dietrich's wishes, will be any improvement.

Just have always liked them, was really excited when Alonso joined, expected a championship at least but that's just not the way it has gone. Ferrari is the team with the best history and they have good leadership, not talking about Arrivabene, but the ones right at the top.

Mercedes will fade back soon, just as Red Bull have, I expect them to get at least 2 championships between now and 2021, Vettel the best man that could be there at the moment, perhaps Bottas and Mad Max in the future.

I just don't find that I wan't to talk to others. I listen and I help, but when it's my turn to share, at least for my group of friends, they don't want to hear what I have to say, or they just don't know how to reply. Honestly what's the point of just dampening others with your problems especially if they can't help.

Online people seem to just be more interested, or at least you can find someone for every interest. But it never compares to having contact with someone, whenever I just get to listen to them, it's just nice to hear another human voice. The other day it was a birthday, and a friend gave me a hug, and it just sort of stunned me that someone would want to embrace me like that.

I've made my choices, it's not like I'm some oppressed snowflake, this is mainly my fault, and most of the times I cause my own issues. Regardless, slow days on /f1/ are hard, as it forces me to think of the lack of people in my life.

>which is why they were ahead of force india and mclaren last year and force india and lotus this year right?

Mclaren must have been focusing on their 2015 car last year, either that or they are even more shit than Williams, both are equally likely I think

I feel like Force India takes a conservative approach to their car originally and is good at developing it. Williams is the complete opposite, they usually start with a good design and do little to improve it. I think Williams and Aston Martin/Force India will be very close next year though, I don't expect Williams to drop off until 2017

Lotus I'm surprised is even doing as well as they are considering all their money problems

/f1/ - giving autists a place to feel alive again
>>
>>63664227
>Does he really want everybody to hate him?
Yeah, actually - he does.

Lewis is one of those people who grew up not feeling liked, feeling outside - and so even when they achieve positions in life where they're utterly adored they unconsciously behave in a way that has people dislike them again. This recreates for them the familiar agony of what they both hated (and which drove them to achieve all they did) and yet has been the ground of their being their whole lives (so they feel terrified and lost when they escape).

Another example of someone like this is U2's Bono.

If one's deepest imprinting is "The world doesn't love me, but I'll make them love me by being more talented than anyone else," then when one actually succeeds and people do love them they have also, quite unknowingly, *completely and utterly destroyed their entire inner world* - because their whole life was predicated on "the world doesn't love me."

This really *is* the end of the world, because while they've spent a lifetime learning to deal with that core belief, they have no experience at all living in a world where their deepest beliefs about reality are suddenly no longer true. And so they will unconsciously destroy what they created, to restore their inner world.

Other people do something similar not with an emotional twist but a mental one, people who grew up in broken and uncertain environments who create success, safety and stability, only to then unconsciously destroy it - because the fear of *when* the end will come (because things being untrustworthy is the one thing in which they have total faith and trust) is far worse than just dealing with the disaster once it occurs.

Feel sorry for the poor bastard. He's worked his entire life, with every breath, in the hope and belief that if he can show his inner talent then people will love him and he won't feel so alone. And yet the more he succeeds, the more alone he feels.

>Honestly what's the point of just dampening others with your problems especially if they can't help.
The point is that by sharing yourself with others - even if they have no idea how to relate to what you're saying, how to respond, or even if they like it or you - what happens is *you* get to experience you.

You want other people to understand and accept you before you bring yourself to the world. But while that's understandable, it's backwards.

What the world expects from us is that we bring ourselves to the world *first* - and as much as we want other people to bring to us.

You, unknowingly b/c you don't see how it works, very knowingly b/c hiding keeps you safe from your own fear of rejection (so you reject yourself first), make sure the world *doesn't* respond to you *by not giving the world any of yourself to which to respond*.

Can you see how that's self-fulfilling? Which also means you can change it.

I deeply understand how much easier it is to do the rejecting oneself rather than wait for someone else to do it. It's the relationship version of cutting and self-harm: I may hate this feeling, but I will at least try to have some control over it by doing it to myself.

You spend so much time fearing rejection, yet what you end up doing is rejecting yourself, every moment. So you might as well accept you can live through rejection - because you've been successfully practicing it your whole life.

Time to start facing your far deeper fear: fear of love & acceptance (b/c you fear that love will someday end).

This won't always feel good. You'll get rejected, everyone does. But like I said, you can handle rejection. What you can't yet handle is *acceptance*.

Don't be the wallflower version of Lewis, recreating rejection because that's what's safely familiar.

Go out, share yourself with the world, and here's the big, big trick: *practice accepting yourself as you speak*.

Stop being a selfish bitch and share yourself!

You *will* love it.

>what happens is *you* get to experience you.

But don't I experience me on a daily basis? I live my life, and feel what I feel, in ways that I could never begin to describe. Sometimes writing helps, which follows your principle of sharing. But how do you tell people things like you wish you were dead, or that you hate the sound of their voice when they need you? Of course you hate them, and of course they are annoying but you help them because you can help. You tell someone that you wish you were dead, and that's all they will ever see of you, you'll never be able to be anything else. At least in my case.

You're right to some extent, as I've got nothing to lose, but I just don't like to let people know what's going on. Maybe I'm just so far inside of my own head, or so stuck in the notion that there's nothing else that makes sense to me. But I've lost what little friends I had, it could be said that I learned a lesson on who my friends are, and it's made me become a better person to others whom consider me a friend, but it's never fun. I was accepted, I was loved, I was told that I was perfect just the way I am, and that nothing could change that. They died and left me here, I guess I'm still that person at the end of the day.

Don't want you to think I'm ignoring or rejecting you, I definitely want to respond but I also don't want to shortchange a response just for the sake of responding quickly. Won't be too long ( < 1hr).

Thanks for writing back and obviously having given what I offered such thought.

It's what we are here for anon..

The moment it said Jen though I immediately imagined the women as Jennifer.
I could see her so clearly.
That qt face slurred slightly by the scotch.
Her hair a little scrunched up.
The way Jason would be slightly taller and more of a presence because of her small height.
They way her ass runs into her back and where he would have put his hand.

It just became so clear.

He on the other hand became Owl guy from watchmen. That one I'm still confused about.

>But don't I experience me on a daily basis?
Yes, but experiencing oneself in isolation is totally different than experiencing oneself while connected to someone or something else. (Other people have difficulty the other way, they share all the time and are utterly terrified of being alone with themselves.)

Since we're in a car racing thread, think of it as the difference between driving a simulator or putting a car in a wind tunnel or even doing solitary test days and actually participating in a race. One's not better than the other, and they both shape and direct each other, but they're very, very different.

And what the right balance is for you I'm not trying to say. All I can say is your balance is too far to the inner, and not enough to the outer. Maybe 50-50 isn't optimal for you, perhaps it's 20-80 or even 10-90. But you're crying out for more than you give yourself.

So get out of the life simulator and try some racing. You may crash at the first turn, but that's still more racing than you'll ever experience just being the test driver for your own life.

Here's a helpful linguistic trick to make sharing yourself with other people even more better/successful/deeper.

Instead of using the common English construction of talking in second person ("you") to describe whatever thought or experience you've had, use first person ("I").

It can be very slippery to get that right consistently, because using second person is such a wildly common defense against intimacy. But when I say "when you do this and then you feel that" I'm both objectifying the other person (since I'm telling them about what it's like to be them - how arrogant and blind and annoying!) and I'm also separating myself from my own experience, and from their reaction to my experience.

Were I to use first person ("when I don't get enough contact I feel so lonely I want to be dead") I'd then have to risk dealing with their acceptance or rejection of *me*, not some safely displaced "you." But what I get in return for taking the risk is I then, even in the speaking of it, get a much more real and deep experience of my own life and myself. It's very cool. Hard to do - and sort of an amusing game when one starts to really try it, like juggling, or getting a corner exactly right.

Anyway, since I'd suggested you go out and share yourself, I'd be setting you up for difficulty if not outright failure if I didn't tell you to use first person when speaking about yourself, second person when talking specifically about them, and "one" when speaking generally.

>>63673031
Let's use something you wrote and I think you'll see what a huge difference just that one change of word can make.

You wrote:

>But how do you tell people things like you wish you were dead, or that you hate the sound of their voice when they need you? Of course you hate them, and of course they are annoying but you help them because you can help.

Now say it to yourself, out loud, using first person:

>But how do I tell people things like I wish I were dead, or that I hate the sound of their voice when they need me? Of course I hate them, and of course they are annoying but I help them because I can help.

Feel the difference?

What I've found is making this tiny change not only makes what I share more real to me, but because when I do I'm being so much more vulnerable the people with whom I'm speaking feel like I trust them, and that I'm sharing something real and important, and they tend to both like it and then respond in kind.

Taking the risk to be vulnerable, even with something this seemingly simple (it's not easy, as I think you'll discover - just simple!), is what creates intimacy.

(More in a bit, I didn't want you to wait forever just so I could say everything completely and perfectly.)

As the person who's writing all that other stuff, I wanted to tell you I thought what you're doing is incredibly helpful and I appreciate it a lot.

When I noticed all the heavy stuff I was writing being interlaced with driver girlfriend smut I was at first sort of perturbed, since I'd wanted everything to just have a single, uninterrupted flow.

But after a second or two I got myself down off my high horse and I simply started to ask myself "hmm, why's this happening this way, right now? This thread and F1 in general are totally dead, and yet *just* as I'm wanting 60 uninterrupted seconds to post this other thing manages to insert itself. Why would this be important?"

And then I suddenly realized that the driver girlfriend smut was the perfect balance to all stuff I was writing. Without what you wrote there'd be way too much of what I wrote, and it would all get heavy and hard to tolerate and ingest and consider. And then I just loved what you were doing and thought the timing of it was incredibly cool.

So I think of what you've been doing as the perfect complement to what I've been doing (and since I enjoy balance that matters to me a lot), and I wanted to thank you, both for what you wrote and when, and also for being so considerate.

Thank you very, very much.

Turns out the hosting fee for the 2015 USGP in Austin was $33M - and it still hasn't been paid.

After spending $400M to build a track that may no longer have a race the COTA owners are starting to do what I thought was impossible - make Tony George look smart.

Domenicali is a lawyer, what's that got to do with passion? Obviously one could ask the same of Arrivabene but it's fairly obvious to me that he's a much more powerful personality than Domenicali playing Mr Nice ever was. That said, Ferrari are nothing more than a brand like Bulgari or Gucci nowadays, the raison d'etre of the road car division was originally only ever to pay for the racing team(s) but this has been totally subverted over the last 20-25 years to the point where it's simply become a brand of things for footballers and the like which also happens to run a (horribly bloated and almost always mismanaged) f1 team.

So /f1/ do we really think Ferrari will close the gap? I think that the car with more power and more pace will give Vettel the chance to get amongst the Merc's, but I still feel that they have pace to spare. It was pretty clear they would win again this year, so I could easily see them withholding updates to the car.

Then again, I hope for the sake of /f1/ we have someone adding to the fight between Lew Lew and Secondfirstberg

>Newey was asked to leave Repton at the age of 16 after an incident at a Greenslade concert at Repton's 11th century Pears Building organised by the school's sixth formers, where he pushed up the sound levels on the band's mixer, blowing out the building's stained glass windows.

Adrian Newey is quite a stunning guy overall, sometimes his ideas are just too radical (MP4-18), but when they work, my god are they good.
