He also had a Verstappen's car smack him in the head in 94. Idk how he survived that. He just leaped out of the car, collapsed, got back up, debriefed, and flew home, and I think he said his family dragged him to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with a brain injury.

Is it feasible for Vettel to win next year? Could Ferrari come up with a way to squeeze out some extra power before the start of the next season and actually, realistically, challenge the Hamil-Berg crew?

poop senna on senna:

>I’ve always felt like I had a connection with him, that we’re somehow similar – I do crazy things that other people wouldn’t do, and I feel like I have an edge, too, that I share something with him. He was such a warrior – that was what I loved about him

>At one point I suggested that Senna, for all his fantastic ability, on many occasions did pull stunts on the track that went beyond accepted – and acceptable – limits, and Lewis tried to make light of it:

>Oh… I think that was probably Senna’s Brazilian spirit, Brazilian nature coming out…

>Right in the middle of one of the worst seasons in McLaren's illustrious history, latest financial statements for 2014 showed McLaren turned a $23.5 million net profit for 2013 into a net loss of $37.6 million in 2014, with “compensation for (the) loss of office of a director” to the tune of a cool $15 million, most likely being paid to former McLaren employee Martin Whitmarsh, now CEO of Ben Ainslie Racing Americas Cup team who left the team after 24 years working for the Woking concern.

>Writing for Forbes, F1 business journalist Christian Sylt said the latest financial statements for 2014 showed such a dramatic turn down in McLaren's financial fortunes for a number of reasons, including a one-off severance and restructuring fee of $54 million paid to Daimler after the team opted out of their customer Mercedes deal to allow works Honda power for the 2015 season.

Good thing they don't have any other massive income hits coming in 2015 like dramatically overpriced drivers or a catastrophic drop in prize money.
>>
>>63483971
why did they drop Mercedes for Honda in the first place?
>>
>>63484312
Marketing reasons. So they could tell sponsors "hey look what happened last time us and Honda were paired up".
Then they went to Honda and went "alright make an engine pls"
>>
Why is Ayyrton ranked to high among past champions.

He won 3 WDC.

In 1988 there was a weird scoring system where only the best 11 results were counted. Prost actually scored more points in the entire season but the title was awarded to Senna WTF.

In 1990 he crashed into Prost at the first corner in Suzuka securing the title for himself right there. The unsportsmanlike move ever done by anyone.

In 1991 is the only year when he won fair and square.

Why is he so worshipped.

Imagine the outrage if Nico Rosberg would have won due to the double point rule in Abu Dhabi during 2014. That would have been the same shit that actually happened in 1988.
>>
>>63484690
1988
>a win is a win
1989
>Prost intentionally crashes into Senna, Senna uses the runoff area as legally written, Prost complains immediately to officials who initially deny his protest, but the denial was waived and his protest reconsidered (illegal)
1990
>Prost turns in early and cuts him off
1991
>a win is a win
He's "worshiped" because he drove just as fast as other drivers with less electronic aids. He has less power, less TC, less self-leveling suspension, less aero, and less money.

Learn your history.
>>
>>63484778
and less interest in pussy, which probably helped him focus that nervous energy into car control.

Not even going to start on what Freud would think of Senna's trance-like descriptions of driving fast, and the tunnel metaphor
>>
>>63484778
>1989
>>Prost intentionally crashes into Senna, Senna uses the runoff area as legally written, Prost complains immediately to officials who initially deny his protest, but the denial was waived and his protest reconsidered (illegal)

1989 - Senna gets an illegal push-start to restart his engine, and would have been disqualified anyway had Prost not protested the cutting of the chicane.

>1990
>>Prost turns in early and cuts him off

Gr8 b8 m8. Senna himself admitted to the press that his crash was intentional and that he never lifted off the throttle. He went into that race having made up his mind to crash.

>just as fast as other drivers with less electronic aids

Senna was markedly slower than the Williams drivers both in '92 and '93. It's revisionist history to say he drove as fast as those with all those aids. If he'd driven as fast, he'd have won as much.

>less power,
And what was the dominant Honda engine of '88 and '89?

>less TC
'no'

>less self-leveling suspension,
The one year (92) where he didn't have active suspension, he was (understandably) well off the pace. Not 'just as fast'

>less aero
Again, he was well off the pace in the years McLaren had weaker aero. On the other hand, the MP4/4 and 5 had the most sophisticated aero on the grid in their years.

At no point was Senna driving 'just as fast but with less electronic aids'

Learn your history well, before correcting others.
>>
>>63484153
Also, it's not like they're losing one of their biggest sponsors to a permanently midfield outfit for 2016
>>
>>63484312
>>63484502
I saw their reasoning being more into tune with not wanting to become Mercedes' B-team with the Merc's newly found dominance. McLaren was no longer Mercedes' best shot at titles, and Mercedes would make sure of that.

They would definitely be better off still using a Merc engine, but I at least give them an A for effort on trying to not become second fiddle, probably being forced to field Mercedes' test drivers, etc.

>>63480870
I hope he crashes, then dies. Not because I hate him or anything, but because I want something exciting to finally happen in this god forsaken shit sport.

>An unwell Lewis Hamilton has delayed his flight to Brazil, but will still compete in this weekend's race Mercedes have said.

>The 2015 world champion pulled out of a sponsor's event in Sao Paulo leading to speculation that he would miss the Brazilian GP at Interlagos.

>However, the team insist Hamilton will be at the wheel of the all-conquering W06 this weekend and the Briton will fly to Brazil later on Wednesday, a day later than originally planned.

>"He's not going to miss the race," a Mercedes spokesman said. "He's going to be a day late... the doctor advised him to cancel the earlier flight so he missed a press conference today."

Poop Senna confirmed for falling asleep at the wheel and crashing and dying at Interlagos in homage to Aryton.

Judging that you have 358's, I'm gunna guess that you're up north. Northern dirt tracks seem a lot better. Most of the small-time, local places in the south are pretty corrupt and ruled by money. They're awfully GOAT af when big tours like Lucas Oil or WoO race on them, though.

Secondberg

i bandwagoned Mercedes when Schumi decided to drive for them, and he's been with the team through those mediocre years. not the best driver, it certainly doesn't come across as effortless for him, but he's had rare moments of brilliance. in total, a bit underrated imo since most attribute all his success to the Merc and seem to dismiss the amount of work he's had to put in since he isn't a "natural driver"; biggest problem is that he doesn't seem very tough mentally. Hamilton barely has to do anything, and he gets under Rosberg's skin, and he's definitely bothered being the obvious de facto no. 2 at Merc.

Perez is cool, too, especially this year with Force India. I guess my third fave would be Vettel, for the bants. Honorable mention for Carlos Sainz in the shadow of Mad Max and Alex Rossi for USA USA USA USA
>>
>>63489564
when i was a yung man in 2008 and saw vettel win in italy i thought he was the bees knees, so he's been my favorite since then.

there are a few i am sympathetic to (verstappen, sainz, perez, and kvyat), but if they come up against vettel in any situation i'll hate them in that moment anyway

i also hate a few drivers (hamilton, ricciardo, massa, raikkonen, button, and alonso)

I think the real problem is that the corkscrew would never pass a safety test
>>
>>63493472
Laguna Seca was considered back the '90's (before Bernie realized Tony George and IMS was such an easy mark), but not only is the new track configuration too short, the facility would have to be completely rebuilt to come up to Formula 1 glitterati party standards. New stands, garages, everything.

Then there's the problem of Laguna Seca being in Monterey, which is pretty much nowhere - tiny local airport, limited hotels, etc.

It's a great track, which is why it was considered, but the other factors caused it to be ruled out.
>>
>>63493472

if eau rogue can pass a safety test then so can the corkscrew
>>
>>63493534

Hockenheim has a population of 20k and the next big airport is in Stuttgart which is 120 km away
>>
>>63493464
Pretty much forever. It makes perfect sense, they pay for the right to host the GP and make their money charging for the admission, advertising, and concessions that an F1 race will bring to their circuit.

Why do you think we have all these Bahrainian-Qatarese-Abu Dhabian grand prix? Because these countries (or people in them) want the prestige of holding an F1 race. So they spend assloads of cash building Tilke-dromes and then are willing to pay heaps more to host the GP as well. Circuits in other countries (Silverstone, Monza, Magny-Cours) have been threatened to be dropped from the calendar for many years now because they can't afford to pay equivalent fees to what the next Azerbaijanian host is.

As I said, the access issues were secondary - but still formidable.

Though a race in Europe to which the (ever-dwindling) number of teams and fans can drive is still wildly more accessible than a track where the next closest major thing is the Garlic Festival in Gilroy.

If Hockenheim - with a location in Europe and a history of GP - can't make any money, there's no way a race in the middle of nowhere (admittedly, a very pretty nowhere if one's ever spent time there) would make enough for a promoter to sign up.

One just has to remember that Formula 1 - to the people who own it, not the riff-raff who might watch - isn't about racing, it's about being rich. Then all the rest of the decisions make sense.

>that pass

I'm not familiar with Indy Car rules, but why wasn't that illegal? Track limits don't matter?
>>
>>63493989

In 1996 the rule was you only had to be on the track when initially attempting to pass somebody; You didn't need to be still on the circuit after that. The rules were changed the following year specifically because of that move.

>>
>>63499075
It's decent, desu. You just have to pick a driver to bandwagon while getting into it, because at first all the oval tracks and cars look the same.

At least that was how I got into it.
>>
>>63499075
Watch the truck series, don't bother with Xfinity, and Cup is decent, but every other week is some sort of 'controversy' that just gets too exhausting to care about in the long run.

Really, just watch the Truck series, and if you have a DVR then set it up to record K&N east/west races too.
>>
>>63499075
Yes
>>63499169
This guy gets it. Cup series is doing its best to kill itself with each passing race. Drifting dangerously close to F1 levels of cost bloating.
>>
Why does everyone suddenly want F1 to race at Laguna Seca? It would be cool to see the cars go around that track, but it would almost certainly be guaranteed to be a boring race. The track is so narrow and short that there really isn't that many overtaking opportunities except for last corner and main "straight". Seriously everything else on the track is either a technical sector, not wide enough, or not long enough of a straight to get alongside the car in front.

Don't get me wrong, it's a great track and it must be great to drive but I just don't see it generating exciting racing for F1 at all.

Watch races from other series' on this track. Not many overtakes. Drivers set up overtakes for laps and laps before finally making the move stick. The problem though is that a F1 car can't really do this, at least not the current ones. You can't follow a car for too long because it overheats the engine, breaks and tires (much more than other series' I'm guessing) but it also fucks the aero, meaning that realistically following a car driving in clean air is not feasible in such a way that you could extensively set up a pass. Let's not forget that the track will probably be neutered to fit the FIA regulations, and the criticism this would generate alone probably wouldn't make it a smart move.

F1 wants a bigger presence in America. They want the casual audience. Why put the race on a race track? If there's going to be the rumored second US GP it's going to be a street circuit in California or something like that where plebs can go see F1 without too much effort or travel required.
>>
>>63499619
>Why does everyone suddenly want F1 to race at Laguna Seca?
Because nobody who wants a Grand Prix there actually knows anything about the track other than "oh wow corkscrew such a unique corner i want to masturbate to it"
>>
>>63499619
>>63499673

Honestly I think Laguna Seca would be a much better suited track for Formula E in a few years when they get their top speeds up and start racing on actual racetracks. Formula E has excelled in making the dullest, narrowest street circuits somehow be amazing races (compared to current F1) with plenty of overtakes, and overtakes in "unique" non-designated "overtake zones". Something like LS would suit the series perfectly if they actually rise above being a meme series and start being more serious about performance levels etc and reach top speeds higher than that of a Ford Focus.
>>
>>63499075
Whether NASCAR or any other series is worth watching depends on why someone would find anything worth watching.

That's not a snarky answer, it's the reminder that people have all sorts of reasons for liking certain things, and so whether something is worth watching to you depends on what attracts and keeps your interest. Do you watch for driving skill? Team performance? Close racing? Soap opera drama? Technology development? The experience of what that series is like in person?

I'd say Cup racing can be worth watching, but as with pretty much any other form of motorsport a DVR is definitely your friend.
>>
>>63499673
Pretty much this. I don't love Laguna Seca except for the Corkscrew and I don't think that's enough to warrant an F1 event.

Honestly if I reached deep and spoke truthfully I'd probably love it as a track day venue if the surrounds were green grass and it was in Europe, but I truly think it's an overrated track.
>>
>>63488669
They don't need to be extremely fast, expensive cars to be fun to watch.
>>
>>63486992

>>

>>63499781
>but as with pretty much any other form of motorsport a DVR is definitely your friend.

This is very true. If you're wanting to get into Nascar, go ahead and DVR every series. Xfinity & Cup is still comfy to throw on the tv as background fodder on a boring weekday.
>>
>>63499708
The elevation changes would break the inverters

And Formula E only races on street circuits because they want their races to take place in city centres where it's as easily accessible as possible and they can set the circuit up and take it down quickly and cheaply and bullshit about demonstrating how eco friendly it is

That and the quietness and zero emissions of the cars does wonders to convince councils to let them host races in the middle of cities where it wouldn't be possible for any other racing series (London, Paris, Punta Del Este etc)

>>
>>63500111
That was just a proposal from the organisers at Imola, no different to Brands Hatch saying "hey guys we're going to host the British Grand Prix look at our layout!"

>>

To be fair it's a much stronger proposal but then if Brands Hatch was to host it would just be the Indy Circuit with maybe the old rally cross chicane at paddock hill tarmacked in.

I've always thought that NASCAR was fun to watch because:

>long periods of sustained racing at upwards of 200 mph (top speed depends on the track)
>43 competitors
>it's neat to see drafting in action
>lots of passing shows the race is competitive
>cars can bump each other a bit without a problem
>driver tempers can get hot
>each track begets a certain type of race (it's a tires race, it's a fuel mileage race, it's a don't-get-caught-in-the-big-one race)
>restarts
>watching drivers race head-to-head while driving entirely different lines
>the drivers have personality (except for Jimmy "The John Cena of NASCAR" Johnson)
>coopetition

I know a lot of people say, "It's just turning left," but driving against 42 other people between 180 and 200 mph a few inches away from a wall for long periods of time is intense.

I will say that this Chase format is dumb. They should have kept the old points system.

After each session the odds change based on previous sessions and statistics and if you have like a 3.5 odd on vetlel to win on thursday and he wins a fp on friday his odds go down obviously. Although if you see that a statistically better driver (vet is better than rai) has mechanical problems early in the weekend but he usually does better despite the lack of practice you might use that in a teammate vs teammate bet. It's unpredictable between midfielders though while at the front its always hwl and mwl and their odds are low as fucc.
