Every time someone talks to my son he traces their words into the couch he'd be sitting on, his pants, etc. What could this mean?

Alright. It probably means he's just into spelling words. Should not be a problem as long as you guide him so he has good social skills.
Give him advanced books, or vocabulary flashcards, or advanced audiobooks. Encourage the skill but teach him to do it at the proper times.
