So, horses are 10

boots are 1 yes?

If (1 + 10) * 4 than 44
If 1 + (10 * 4) than 41

You're missing your parentheses.

Oh, my bad, a pair of shoes is 4, which means a single shoe is 2, yes?

>>
>>8146635
if you look at this logically, you can't determine the answer. the horse is 10, the horseshoe is 4, the two boots is 2, but there's no way to tell what the one boot is. for all the people thinking "well the one boot must be 1, because 2 boots is 2!" notice that there's no connective between the two boots symbol with a value of two. in other words, if it was 1 boot + 1 boot with the + relation, then we're talking. however, it's not; there is no reason to infer that the value of the one boot symbol is related to the value of the two boot symbol.

A textbook I'm reading uses the notation [math]a_0 \cdot a_1 a_2 a_3 a_4 \ldots[/math] to refer to the leading integer and the individual decimal places of a number expressed decimal notation. Surprise: conventions are arbitrary and subject to change. Which is the bigger problem with OP's picture, too many assumptions required.

But if you want a counterargument, two boots = (one boot)(one boot) is the type of visual example introduced to elementary school children. The fact that it does not correspond later notation doesn't seem to bother anyone.
