hey /sci/, actual science/tech question here.

trying to make a heatmap of sorts.

overview:
working on a project that involves analyzing my 1000 or so entries of origin/destination co-ordinates from a CSV. I want to connect each origin/destination pair with a route (freeway, etc.) Then create a heatmap of those routes, to show me which stretches of highway are the most frequented.

also, i'm only using california for this.

what's the easiest way to do this? most methods i have found for creating heatmaps are heatmaps of points, however, i need to translate my points into routes, then create a heatmap of the routes.

bump for luck

what can't you do exactly? find routes?

well, what I have is just a CSV of origin and destination coordinates.

what I would like to do is make the origin/destination coordinates into routes, then display them as a heat map.

I don't know where to begin. I'm trying to decide what program to accomplish this with.

all the things i can think of: matlab, python, etc, won't convert to street routes.

if you have any experience with this sort of thing and can point me in the right direction, I would be eternally grateful.

i've been reading about different GIS programs for days.

lately ive been trying QGIS but i don't think that will create street routes from points either.

although it does have a fairly simple heatmap feature.

https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/distance-matrix/?hl=en

is this something you would be interested in?
It would give you routes.
For the heatmap, I don't know how the routes are described, but you can basically associate +1 to all the pixels of a route each time you know it's been taken.
The +1's will sum up, and the most used routes will have higher values associated with them.

ah, I was looking at google maps APIs, but wasn't sure if it could do it.

how would that give me the routes exactly?
doesn't that API give distance and time?

forgive my ignorance, i'm very new to the subject

try this

it literally gives the most probable route.

I haven't done any similar project but this is what I would use if I had to.

qGIS can do what your asking. theres a third party plugin that can import CSV files and from there, you can create a heatmap. dont have the name but its easy to get

youve done it before?

thanks man, trying that now.
