avians are still technically reptiles, them and other reptiles diverged from some of the original reptiles. some publications list them as non-avian/avian reptiles and others just separate the two. You can still consider birds to be reptiles or their own things, avians.
However, even this can vary because ever since cladograms shifted from anatomical/physiological into genetical, cladograms have become a straight-up clusterfuck so don't be surprised if this conception changes.

Birds evolved from therapods (a type of dinosaur), dinosaurs evolved from reptiles which branched off, they share a common ancestor but became very different. Mammals also appeared around that time, but remained as small rodents until dinosaurs all went extinct. Reptiles are cold-blooded, mammals are warm-blooded. Some birds are also believed to be warm-blooded, and the jury is still out on dinosaurs.

Sea dwelling mammals are believed to have originated on land. Their ancestors probably looked something like a hippopotamus before they evolved to be fully aquatic. They will always pay the price of needing to breathe air though. Evolution will never give them gills.
