Why are you working for a technological future /sci/? Don't you realize it would be the end of all life as we know it?
Think for a moment about the implications of convenient space travel. If you could fly around the galaxy with ease faster than light speed, you could easily smash your ship or a large projectile into any planet you want with near infinite energy and utterly destroy all life on the surface. There is no defense against this. If a single person with a spaceship was having a bad day, billions will die.
Think about the implications of immortality. The species would no longer evolve. The immortals would soon occupy all available living space, leaving very little room for the next generation. Society would calcify and stagnate. Imagine if the Romans were still alive right now in positions of power, society would never have developed to where it is today. There would NEED to be some sort of population turnover, and yet nobody would volunteer to lose their eternal life. The only way to make room for greater numbers would be war, ethnic cleansing by a dictatorial elite, or some other horrible involuntary method of mass extermination.
How about virtual reality? Once it gets perfected, a virtual world could be indistinguishable from the real one. People will dive into their own fantasy universe, made real for all their senses. All needs in the physical world would be provided for, there would be no reason to ever wake up. You'd have billions of people sitting in chairs with their brains hooked up to machines Matrix-style. Empty eyes staring at nothing. For all your achievements and grand adventure in your personal virtual reality, not a single thing is accomplished in the real world. It would be as if all of these people are functionally dead. They would exist as nothing but a silent pattern of bits in computer code.
Why are you dreaming of the future? It's a horrible place to be
