Hey /sci/, I have a question regarding the possibility of turning farmland into a barren wasteland through the use of chemicals.
I have a large surface of land where vegetables are grown (mostly potatoes) and I need to make it unusable for farming. I've read about ancient conquerors "salting the land" in order to make it barren but can't find much information on whether this is scientifically accurate or a myth.
This would have to be done only on a precisely limited surface, so I can't use anything as inaccurate as an airplane to disperse any chemicals.
If salt would do the trick, I'd be happy to do it by hand.
Any advice and resources on the matter would be most welcome.

My mother retired and is now living next to this obnoxious farmer who dislikes "city folk" and has decided to abuse her by using chicken excrement in place of regular fertilizer on the field next to her house. The smell is unbearable and, instead of enjoying her retirement, she is forced to stay inside because of the stench of scorching chicken shit.
On all his other fields, he uses normal fertilizer.
It doesn't help that he once shot a stray dog I adopted when I was a kid.
I am going to destroy not only the field next to the house, but his entire land.
He and his peasant wife are going to starve because I say so.

Forgot to mention, ideally do the salt thing with water either when it's raining or smth, that way the salt dissolves and goes down into the soil and doesn't sit there on top

Any salt will do the trick, Sodium Chloride is obviously cheap and readily available so it's your best bet. Make a saturated salt solution and put it inside of a garden sprayer (you can buy them at hardware stores and fill them with whatever you want) then spray over the area. You'll likely have to reapply the salt a few more times to make sure everything is dead, but it should work well and not be too laborious.
