The basic principle is the same as modern rotor blades. Rotation - lift. Rotors just use less material and would be more weight/energy efficient. Question is, why would you want to build one?

I think so.
I assume modern helicopters use the difference in air pressure to archive lift.
From looking at the picture it seems like the intention was to screw itself upwards/pushing air down not forcing a higher speeding air stream above the rotor.

Yes, it's an Archimedes screw, not exactly the same as aerofoil pressure differences, but still, moving air = lift.
