I have to declare my major in a couple terms, but I don't know which pigeon hole I'd like to select for myself. There's three I'm primarily interested in, but I'm open to suggestions.

>Chemistry
I've long been interested in synthesizing my own chemicals, and I do sterile lab-like work often and really it, and could see myself loving getting up every morning and going to work in a lab, plus, biochemitry is an extremely interesting post-grad option. The downside to this option is the terrible job market (negative growth, little room for advancement, etc)

>Computer Science
Despite it's meming on /sci/, I think it's a very viable major. I love the flexibility of it (being able to work from home, mainly, but also being able to do a broad array of different teh jobs). It's extremely employable, with interesting post-grad options like AI. Out of interest alone, this would be my second choice, just behind chemistry.

>Mechanical Engineering
This stands out to me because Mechanical Engineers go through very practical, real life education and I just feel like an engineers brain is well suited for a variety of things. It's like being educated on how to think well. Engineers aren't going anywhere anytime soon either, and the job market is ok.

>>
>>7944911

Chemistry is shit. Do chemical engineering instead.
>>
>>7944941

>>
>>7944939
I should've made my opinion on engineering a little more positive I suppose. I do think the field is really interesting, esp the robotics and aerospace portion of it.
>>
>>7944941
yeah fuck off

and why is chemistry shit? bad job market?
>>
>>7944939
>>7944941
Did you chucklefucks even read his post? He's obviously interested in very different things than what ChemE offers. I'm in ChemE myself, but it isn't the only career path out there and it's not the best fit for everyone.

The only thing he's wrong about is the health of our job market.

BLS says that chem jobs are growing faster than chemE. I don't know how they measure that though. It's a fairly reputable source though.

We don't like it because
1. ChemE =/= chemistry in any way. I hear it's more like physics.
2. It's another just another jab at hard sciences for not being big swingin dick engineering (jobs, money, etc)
3. It does seem like there are far less jobs in chem. People complain about it constantly on the Internet. Though, ironically, I have never met any chemistry PhD irl that has had difficulty finding a job or at least getting interviews...
4. If my school had a chemE program I would switch into it. I'm not willing to transfer in my senior year or leave my gf and friends behind either. My interest for math was nonexistent when I started chem and now I actually really like it.

Networked systems engineering

Sometimes; I'd say no overall, though

There is literally nothing afterwards, so if you really don't care THAT much about your life, you might as well just do crazy/fun shit that you're gonna really enjoy. Maybe try and make yourself known, learn something new. Even if you know that everything is pointless and this isn't the best place to live in, maybe you could try to make others see the opposite. Help those in need. If you're going to spend an eternity with absolute nothingness, you might as well spend a few years in -something-.

PhD student, came from a state school. I was probably lucky, because I did research with a professor who was a recent and somewhat well-known MIT graduate, who probably gave me a very good rec letter because my others were from people who are not notable. Beyond that, I was admitted to a few conferences as an undergrad, at least one of which is quite big. But nothing extremely amazing.

>>
>>7947311
No, see, I hadn't -published- the research, just presented it. To do this it was necessary to write abstracts and summaries and get them reviewed for acceptance, but it is not equal to publication in a journal.
>>
>>7947311
They actually have conferences just for undergrads to come present. It's a pretty sweet deal; they'll completely pay for you just to come watch other people present.
>>
>>7947286
>>7947278
I am there for undergrad so I do not know much about the grad program. I guess that is based more around the field you want to get into.

Rent is pricey but can get cheaper if you get a roommate or two. I do not really know from experience first hand since I get free housing as an RA but I have plenty of secondhand knowledge.

Getting roommates can mean apartments for around $400 or so.

Or do as the other anon said and just live in Dixon or another close town to get cheaper prices. I know one grad student who commutes from Oakland everyday since she lives there with her boyfriend.

I knew a guy who went there, and according to him it's perfect for people who genuinely want to learn, challenge themselves, and have a deep knowledge of their field. You're that guy who posted on reddit.

Math department is awesome. Highly recommend it. As a first year, there are a few likely courses you'd be taking, and there's info for this on the math department site and the college catalog which you should read, but to give you a break down, but as a math major, you'll either be taking:
1) Honor's Calculus (16100-16300). This course is designed for people who did Calculus in high school, but have never done any proofs. It's a lot of fun, and the material is very interesting. There are two flavors of this:
a) Regular. You read Spivak's Calculus for two quarters and then move onto his book on Calculus on Manifolds. This is a traditional lecture course.
b) IBL (Inquiry based learning). You are given a script. On the script there are defintions, theorems, lemmas, etc. For homework, you have to prove up to a certain point on the script. In class, students present these proofs, and the class critiques and asks questions. The professors don't teach anything (though they are there for office hours and other help). I'm in this right now, it's super fun and I highly recommend it if you think this is your kind of thing.

There are courses above this which you can place into. If you self study a book like Spivak's Calculus to completion, or already have some extra background in proofs and analysis, you would be able to do so if that interests you.

In terms of Philosophy, I did take a course last quarter, it was reasonably interesting. The department here seems good, and after a bit of background it seems easy to get yourself into the courses that the department runs for graduate students.

If you or >>7947721 have any questions, feel free to ask.

>If you're in undergrad, dont quit or give up. People who cannot handle engineering choose to quit because of their work ethic, not smarts. I was never smart but I worked my ass off. Graduated with a 2.6 but I worked my ass off networking and eventually got to where I am getting a full time salary while a company pays for my phd. I still feel like an idiot at times but I know hard work trumps all. If you ever feel overwhelmed, break big problems up into smaller ones and block sites like 4chan or other time wasters. time management is key. also, dont have serious relationships if you want to get this far but def get your masters at least in engineering. i know a bunch of engineers who always say they dont need it but yet have stayed in the same position for 27+ years no promotion

I just got into UConn (funded PhD) and am curious how you feel about it so far. Do you like it?

It was my 2nd choice (family work there / went there / live nearby + my home state) but would like a PhD student's opinion on it.

Also, I will say the faculty culture is different. I genuinely felt like VT and PSU were world-class faculty whereas UConn is kindof like, meh. I mean it's perfectly fine for me (I dont want to go into academia) and it gives me free reign over my experiments because I brought my own funding in but, it was something somewhat noticeable. So hopefully your potential adviser is good and if not im sure you could find one.

Thanks for the info!

I wasn't the one who posted on Reddit but it's good to know there's at least one other Math/Philosophy asshole out there.

I've taken quite a bit of university level math in high school (the most advanced being an independent study of Munkres Topology and a course on number theory), so it would be cool to at least try the Honors Analysis course to see if it kicks my ass. Do you know anyone who took it as a freshman?

With that sort of background, it seems to me that you at least have the mathematical maturity to try it, so if you're interested, I recommend it. There is a guy in my dorm from Russia who did it, he didn't think it was so bad. My understanding was that he had previously taken a course in analysis at Moscow State University, so he had a very strong background. I think that beyond having a reasonable amount of mathematical maturity, you're just going to want to know as much analysis as possible.

Read baby Rudin (maybe Spivak first if you think you want more background, I don't know how rigorous your calculus experience was in high school). After that, there are other topics you'll want to cover for more preparation, but basic analysis (at the level of having read through all of Spivak's Calculus) is a necessity to get in. I'll see if I can grab a copy of the syllabus so you can see what you should study once you're done with Rudin (assuming you have time). If you really want to do it though, I recommend starting as soon as possible.
>>
>>7947877

That would be great, thanks.

I feel like my calculus classes were not overly rigorous. We did epsilon-delta proofs and went over briefly the proofs of other theorems but that was about it. however I do think that, like you said, I have the mathematical maturity to learn at that level, so it might just be a matter of learning some basic analysis beforehand, which will likely overlap with what I was doing in topology to an extent.

I do lighting design specifically but I know a decent amount about everything. I'll probably do some apprenticeships/assistantships after I graduate for a couple years then go for my MFA. Then hopefully design regionally and maybe get some Broadway credits then once I get older see if I can be a lighting design professor at a university.

I find what I do in theatre so much more rewarding than what I do in science which is why I made the transition. Also, since I do tech and not acting I'll actually be able to find work.

I don't know why I said STEM and engineering. The reason non-STEM people are generally satisfied is because UCL is usually second to Oxbridge for social sciences (except LSE for economics) and humanities. It also has a really good reputation for social sciences and humanities and job opportunities are pretty good. It's also really good for STEM but lots of STEM guys are never satisfied and are too competitive for their own good.

I have a question: is it a bad idea to get a master's in international journalism? International journalism degrees are basically half international relations, and half journalism.
I know international relations degrees are valuable right now, but I know communications degrees are worthless. That said, journalism is no longer in the bottom 10 masters, meaning the field must be doing better. English still is in the bottom 10. I like writing, and would love to make a career in it, but I also like the idea of a career in international relations analysis.

From what I've seen, there are 8 notable programs:
Columbia University
University of Paris
New York University
George Washington University
Boston University
American University
University of Kent
The New School

I've actually already been accepted to the one at BU, and I've taken the offer with a small scholarship. But now I'm having second thoughts, and I'm even thinking I should transfer to the Uni of Paris (Sciences Po) after a semester, just because of price.
I feel like if I do this degree, it will put me on a path I will be fulfilled by. At the same time, it's a risky path, and I could see myself doing well with a more profitable path, like statistics.
Thoughts?

I highly recommend doing math at Uchicago. The department here is excellent and does a very good job teaching undergraduates so long as you start in Math 160s. If you just want to do Honors Calculus, you don't need preparation BC Calculus. So long as you don't forget everything over the summer, you should be able to place into it. If you somehow don't, just talk to the department, they will let you in (I know people in my year who did so). The course is designed for people who have never done proofs before, so don't worry, you're prepared to take it as long as you're willing to put the time in. It's a tough course (about half of my class has dropped), but if you put the time into it, it's very interesting and a lot of fun.

When I was in your position, I self studied Spivak's Calculus for about a month, and got about half way through it (I was busy for most of the summer). With that level of experience, I was placed into regular analysis (sort of, I placed into math 159 and was told by the department I could take math 203 if I wanted to), which I opted out of in favor of doing Honors Calculus. It's been pretty easy for me as a result, and I'm on track to do Honors Analysis next year.

If you decide to do more preparation, you should do Spivak. If you finish it, there's a good chance you'll get into Honors Analysis. If you want to take that course and have more time, you should look at Rudin as well. If you finish Spivak and decide you don't want to pursue math heavily further, you can choose to take regular/accelerated analysis instead, and basically get out of all math requirements for any other major (econ, physics, chem, etc).

tl;dr is you should place into math 160s with just BC Calculus. If you want to prep more or decide if you like math, read Spivak's Calculus. If you finish it, you probably get into Honors Analysis, in which cause you can choose what you want to take.

In terms of extracurriculars, I'm probably a bad person to ask cause I don't really do any. I do participate in stuff like scav and HvZ, plus my house has a really good culture and is very active, so I tend to spend more time on that. The vast majority of people do extracurriculars, and it seems to me the way to balance it is just time management. Choose classes and extracurriculars which will take up an amount of time such that you are going to be able to sleep.

I don't think the grade deflation is that terrible, there are fairly clear expectations of what you need to know. The professors are generally super receptive to giving outside help, they have office hours and you can pretty much schedule as much outside help as you need. There's other support too, like the Harper tutoring program. You got into Uchicago. You're smart. It's more about whether you can find the time to do all of the work and understand the material in all of the classes than anything else.

2. Computer Science + Literary Studies double major
3. Yes, but not because of my university, it's really cool here. I love the people, kind of glad I didn't go to UT Austin. Sports culture is non-existent and mostly everyone loves technology and i can collaborate with people on projects.

I got provisional admitted to cal poly Pomona. I'm a CC transfer. I'm surprised that I got admitted since I don't have the physics courses completed. Though, I got 80 credits with a 3.71 GPA. I was scared since I got denied from CSU long beach, SDSU, and SLO. If I truly get admitted then I am majoring in computer engineering.
