1kW Laser Rust Cleaner
Watch it in action

Cool. All the other ones I've seen where way more powerless and time consuming to the point of impracticality.
>>
>>7927100
OK, so the operator is dumping 1kW into this grate and it still is cold enough to handle with his bare hands. A little suspicious, no?

Bonus: Youtube thought this was a relevant follow up: https://youtu.be/_5FtcExv7KY
(and it is work safe)
>>
Cool, but it seems like it still takes longer than say chemical baths.

how does it feel being mentally retarded?

I want one.
>>
>>7927140
is that thing a man?
>>
that's cool and all but i think that is one of the few types of things that the laser was not meant to clean

there's a lot of holes and stuff in it for rust to hide in, and you'd have to maneuver it in lots of awkward directions to clean out all of the nooks and crannies

i would only use this on stuff like sheets of metal, but i'm no mechanic
>>
>>7927157
This is portable and much cleaner

>>7927244
It really depends on how deep the laser can penetrate. My guess is it is a shallow surface technique but with repeat passes you should be able to remove more of the affected material

that's fucking cool but not even close to practical (yet, anyway)

>Desperately attempting back of the envelope physics
At 1:33 he is touching with his bare hands the surface he has recently treated. This is iron, not famed for heat dissipating properties, for cooling fins we prefer aluminium.

you're a grade-A retard m8
stop skipping your fucking thermodynamics classes

kek, it's like you have already forgotten that you were the one who went full consipiratard by saying "HMMM DAT'S SUM MIGHTY SUSPICIOUS BCUZ HE TOUCHED IT HERPADERP"
I don't have to calculate jackshit to call you a retard for assuming stupid shit on the basis of an advertisement video from a company that builds laser-based derusting equipment

literally kill yourselve, you fucking schizoid downy
>>
Smells like BS
Until somebody says how it works I'm not buying it
For all I know it could be red dye that decomposes in the laser instead of actual rust
>inb4 lol it like gets lasered lol duh
I bet you know all about lasers
>>
>>7927513
The heating lasts for about 80 seconds. At 1 kW that is 80 kJ. Heat capacity of iron is about 0.5 kJ/kg K. So the heating for 1 kg piece is delta T of 160 degrees or 80 degrees for a 2 kg piece. Starting at room temperature at about 20 degrees we would have heated this to 100 degrees plus.

The laser is acting on the surface so the surface woulds be hotter than the core.

For not taking part in the debate you sure debate a lot.

Bait was never this foul.
>>
>>7927529
The energy is burning off the rust.

A kettle is 3 kw.

I'd say it's pretty cool.
>>
>>7927548
Laser ablation can indeed clean surfaces without significant heating of the bulk material, why don't you try reading up on things before shitting all over yourself.
>>
>>7927570
>A kettle is 3 kw.
Sure. Just don't forget about heat capacity.
For iron this is about 0.5 kJ/kg K.
For water it is 4.2 kJ/kg K which is why it takes a long time to heat water.
>>
>>7927623
The thing is, how much of these 80kJ stay in the main iron body and how much leaves with the rust?
we can't really say how hot it get's if we don't know how much energy it absorbs
>>
DOES THIS MEAN WE'LL HAVE REAL LASER GUN WEAPONS SOON????>?>

Pulsed lasers cause localized shock waves that eject most of the hot (and partially-vaporized) material (and much of the surrounding cold material) from the surface of the part. The heat from the laser doesn't really have time to significantly transfer into the part itself.

The guy would suffocate. Unable to stand, he would be wiggling around on the floor like Spaghetti on IceĀ©. It'd be a miracle that anyone could film this at all. Or are we assuming there's friction and air in this high school level physics, idealized world of yours as well?

Not much, probably focused on a spot a few inches in front of it.

Fun fact is that you can shoot it at your hand without danger.
