Because he's a meme scientist. He's a stamp collector who has memorized a bunch of facts and he regurgitates them in a bite-sized form for the general public to consume. He hasn't contributed anything to the field of astrophysics in the way of research or discovery. He was dishonest in his correspondence with Carl Sagan and has been Brian Williams-esque in over-representing their relationship. To his credit, he's well-spoken and passionate about all things related to space. That counts for something.

Honestly I respect him and Nye. We need people doing what they are. They're passionate about education the everyday person.
