For Math, I go over everything (if there's something to derive, I do it my self because i find it provides greater insight than just reading the bottom line) then do exercises, starring ones that I will come back to before an exam if they are hard to understand.

You don't need them for school, you choose to use them to be able to study more efficiently.
Your brain is a machine, you could go full autism and try and control all aspects of your life like your diet, exercise regimen and sleep completely in order to function at peak efficiency. Or you could take a pill that does the same thing, and socialise and have a life. In some cases, it will even allow you to be better (see erdos and amphetamines). Your choice!
