hey /sci/ how do you guys afford college?

I went for a year at a state uni for engineering but had to leave due to not being able to afford it. My grades were good but I couldn't get any scholarships. So how do you guys afford your education?

Take loans

Crippling debt.

>how do you guys afford college?
I could never afford college if I had to pay for it.
In fact, I could probably never attend if I wasn't given free housing and food.

Socialism feels good.

But I guess even in the US you can attend college being poor. Don't they give out monstrous loans that you replay for the rest of your life?
Or do they only give them to people with co-signing parents?

My dad is paying for my tuition and rent.

>mfw bad credit, can't take loans
>mfw parents won't help at all, uni thinks they make too much money
>mfw too white to get scholarships
>>

But college costs 300€ per semester anon, what are you talking about ?
>>
my scholarships go into a few thousand surplus each year, which goes to cover most of my rent and food. im lucky enough to have my parents cover the rest of that, which i'd estimate around $2k extra per year. if i didn't have my parents' help, then i'd probably take an easy job at school or push harder to find stipend-funded research positions (arguably much harder for undergrads).

white male btw, so no, not a minority scholarship. just gotta go out and find the money.

How do I find scholarships?

I have pretty good grades as well technically being a latino male going into STEM, so massively underrepresented.

Fuck off. Im latino doing chem eng. Scholarship money is 4me.
Fight me faggot

quick reply to this post when your federal grant will make you finish university without any debt while others will contemplate suicide as they look for jobs and you can just lean back and do triple integrals without any burdens whatsoever in your family's basement.

Parents saved and invested well. My family pays full freight. Both me and my brother. College funds are nice.

I've got a job tutoring math on campus, so I can eat. Crippling debt covers the rest

I live in Australia, where you can defer all payments (interest free) until you're earning over $54,000 a year, at which point it is taken out of your income as a small percentage each year.

The government also gives me $380 a fortnight just for existing, plus an extra $1200 at the beginning of each semester.

Change country. In Rome I went to uni for a year back in 2010 iirc, it cost 900€ total, though I didn't buy any books so that might be an issue if you can't find torrents or good handbook scans/pdf rewrites, teachers follow to the letter the books they use during classes, or at least that's how it was in my course (astrophysics, I quit later for personal reasons), I believe they've contracts with the editors, it's a kind of speculative way to force the studens buy certain books over others.

I've no idea how it works in the US but if uni costs you more than 10k a year, you could as well rent an cheap apartment in some European country and go to state uni if language isn't a problem, you'll probably have still a lot of money left at the end of the year. Also I believe you can get some funds if you're going as student, though don't ask me because I don't know anything about that.

Public university here in NOT-AMERICA is not only the highest ranked university in the country but also only costs 60$ per year and the government pays the rest.

Feels good to live in a country that actually cares about its citizens.

Need based grant. Family's poor AF, didn't even have to apply except for the FAFSA and I'm going full ride to a decently ranked research institution. The only drawback is it's in goddamn Seattle.

Well I'm in community college doing an Electronic Engineering Technology degree and we just had some guy in today during my Control Systems class from a company who was looking to hire 10-20 systems engineering technicians, mostly for stuff dealing with aircraft. A lot of the work involves running loads of simulations to see how aircraft control systems respond to unexpected stimuli. There are full time positions for graduates with their AS in EET and internships for people who may still be a semester away. He didn't elaborate on the pay but I'm guessing it'll be between 40-60k per year.

Honestly feel like I cheated the system. No debt and decent job prospects. I can always go for my bachelors later and the company might pay for it.

Find a decent CC near you with an engineering technician program of your choice. Work and go to school, pay out of pocket. $2000/semester roughly, with financial aid/scholarships it could be virtually nothing. Only downside is you may only find CC engineering programs for common engineering majors like ME or EE. I doubt you'll find chemical/nuclear/etc. engineering programs at anything outside a four year if that's what you want to do.

kek

my uni requires you to report scholarships and adds that money to your expected family contribution

it changes how much the university has to pay, not how much your family pays

>be poor

I'll probably have to throw some of my own my money down as I take big boy engineering classes but for now FAFSA has my college costs covered. Not one loan yet.

It makes me really uncomfortable that there are poor people posting on 4chan. Maybe we should divide the boards by social class or something.
