How long until we colonize Mars?
>>
>>7896105
Never. There's no reason to.
>>
>>7896105
I doubt it will ever happen. The people who believe that colonization on Mars is achievable are probably the biggest optimists that've ever lived.
>>
>>7896108
You've clearly never been to a hood haven't you?
>>
>>7896113
Whatever problems you have on earth, you will have a million more problems on Mars
>>
>>7896113
>implying hoods won't exist in space
>>
>>7896126
Now we have a reason to colonize Mars
>>
>>7896117
>>7896113
why don't we send the niggers to Mars?
>>
>>7896105
how long until you get accused of being a colonizer and opressor and get pumped up with earth guilt for colonizing mars ?

Have you seen Elsium.

Obviously the rich peeps will be enjoying luxury life on these countries.

Humanity wont go there. The leaders will.

Fuck illuminati.

When people can make money out of it.

Someone has to scrub their toilets and feel superior to.

5 weeks.
>>
If you have the logistics to colonize Mars. You can build O'neil Cylinders at the Earth Lagrange points and mine asteroids.

Mars will only ever be an interesting research project for astro historians.

how the fuck would that stuff in cowboy bebop work anyway?
>>
For everyone saying that there is no reason to colonize Mars, I can think of a reason. You see, when technology was developed to put a man on the moon back in the 60's, that same technology made it's way back to earth and found a way into people's daily lives. Toothpaste for example was originally something made for astronauts in space, and is now used by almost everyone on earth. This same principle applies to sending a man to Mars.
>>
>>7896142
>Have you seen Elsium.
Yeah, Mars was too hard for them too.
>>
>implying Venus isn't a better candidate

This.

Spinoff technologies are one of the most fantastic benefits of space exploration. I think there are some estimates floating around that for every dollar the US government spends for NASA to develop new systems and technology, there's a return in spinoff tech of about seven dollars. Need a source check on that, but basically economies grow like mad when money is being funneled into space R&D.
>>
We're not going to make it onto other planets before we critically damage the environment on this one.
>>
The 2020s when the Chinese colonize the "Red Planet" first

Or, everyone all at once when all the hidden advanced technology is released
>>
>>7896117
This.
The simple economics of it.
Whatever you want from Mars, it's a million times easier, faster and cheaper on Earth.
>>
>>7896555
>Toothpaste for example was originally something made for astronauts in space,
Nigga you is dumb af
>>
>>7896701
I mean the tube of toothpaste. Toothpaste used to come in a jar in the form of powder.
>>
>>7896719
No

a simple wiki search would have educated you:
>In 1880, Doctor Washington Sheffield of New London, CT manufactured toothpaste into a collapsible tube

1880!!!!

People on /sci/ are so stupid they must be sent in Mars, so their bones and DNR start to decay. Mars can be nice prison, like Australia was. Yea, Mars can spark new interest in science and make new generation of scientists. No, elite don't go to live in Mars, because we are not lvl. 2 civilization, we are lvl. 0.
>>
>>7896746
Toothpaste was a bad example. There's other things the space shuttle used the effects everyone.
>>
>>7897097
>muh teflon coating meme

The fact that can't name three relevant examples off the top of your head speaks volumes
>>
>>7897102
Why would I know three off the top of my head?
>>
>>7897111
If space programs realy produced a lot of spin offs we'd all know about it and could name a few.
The fact is that space programs, by themselfes, produce hardly any spin offs at all.
>>
>>7897117
Not true at all
>>
>>7897117
I'm certain that airplane technology came as a result of NASA.
>>
>>7896108
There is always a reason to travel as far as we can possibly go. The explorers of centuries past had no reason to go to North America then right?
>>
>>7897158
Bazinga!
>>
If space technology filters down to civilians then why don't they simulate a trip to mars, analyze the techniques and technology that would be needed, and then build them independently? You don't need to build a house to test a door. Seems to me like they could save a lot of expenses and maybe even make money by putting stuff on the market this way.
>>
>>7897172
Idk why don't you ask them xD
>>
>>7896105
Within 100 years.

Remember: the meek shall inherit the Earth. The rest of us shall own the stars.
>>
>>7897134
give we one clear example of a spin off we got from space travel

>>

Nice list. Imagine what cool spin offs will happen if we try and go to Mars.
>>
>>7897230
>>7897407
Nice unbiased list

Most items are just further developments of existing tech and/or collaborations of NASA with private corps.
No truly new and original tech.
>>
>>7896191
>>7896191
Yeah, but after 100 years of that terraforming mars will only take a small fraction of the new space economy and the terrestial space will be too valuable to pass up.

I just think this whole spin off meme is false advertising. Space travel/exploration/science has enough merit in and by itself. It costs a shitload of money, even for something ''simple'' like putting a man in orbit. Accept that. Explain that.
But don't try to sell it with bullshit.
>>
>>7897688
It's not really advertising, it's just facts made available to the public.
>>
>>7897705
Fact
>LED technology used in NASA space shuttle plant growth experiments has contributed to the development of medical devices
>Diatek Corporation and NASA developed an aural thermometer

False advertising
>NASA gave us LED tech
>thank you NASA for inventing the infrared thermometer

And so on

What type of ore does Mars have? If for nothing else, the abundance of its ore could be a reason to go once travel becomes cheaper. That and the fact that we could pollute Mars to oblivion and nothing would change.

>>
What's the threshold for "colonization?" Babies being born there?
>>
>>7898279
Which will never happen thanks to congress.
