A partial derivative in common english is the same as subliminal parsonship in aristocratic english, whereas a total is the same as a motel.

[math]\dfrac{d}{dx}(xy) = y + x\dfrac{dy}{dx}[/math]
[math]\dfrac{\partial}{\partial x}(xy) = y[/math]
the partial derivative (wrt x) considered all non-x variables (in this case, y) as constant, so as you can see we essentially fixed y such that [math]dy/dx=0[/math].
