the silicon dioxide would just react with the magnesium and not the aluminium without the sulfur and so i did some digging online and found this post:

I guess the sulfur compounds does that. Fun thing to do for bonfires: get lots of hair from a hairdressers. Many will want "contributions" to bonfires for midsummer and fifth of November.
Just make sure they don't remember you.
