This is the education in the USA today.
Could some Murrifat kindly explain to me how this equals 16?
The did division before multiplication. I don't understand the reasoning behind it though.
>>7748799
That picture is fake. Look at the right border of the projection. The 1 vs 16 thing was shopped in.
>>7748799
>not posting the original
>>7748817
>[math] i = i \implies i - i = 1 [/math]
Hahahaha, no way anyone believes this is real.
>>7748830
check /pol/
>>7748835
Yeah but /pol/ isn't real, the vast majority are trolling as for the rest, well a normal distribution has two sides.
>>7748817
But.. The old way in that picture is incorrect anyway
>>7748799
This isn't an "old way vs common core" issue. There's just brackets missing.
> 20/(5(2*2)) = 1
> (20/5)(2*2) = 16
Nobody writes shit like that on paper though. That teacher is top shite
>>7748817
My solution:
Introduce two new "imaginary numbers" p and q
such that (p)(q) = x^2 + y^2 + xy
I'd love to see that teacher struggle to explain why my solution isn't
>equally correct
>>7748817
If kids that young could follow that shit, that would make Murrican kids breddy smart.
This shop is dumber than OP's.
Why do people hate common core so much?
>>7748860
R E A D T H E T H R E A D

>>7748866
It's a bunch of fake shit senpai
>>7748860
Because people are retarded. The main argument seems to be "its different to how I learnt", which is retard on many levels.
>>7748799
Because PEMDAS.
First, Parantheses: 2 * 2 = 4.
Then multiplication comes second. 4 * 5 = 20.
Then division, 20/20 = 1.
PEMDAS is stupid. Always has been, always will be.
>>7748872
Multiplication and division occur at the same time so you got from left to right
>>7748855
>If kids that young could follow that shit
They can. There have been numerous examples of average 1st graders learning up to algebra in less than a year. The only "crazy" thing you need to do is teach them new stuff once they've learned the old stuff.
>>7748875
I don't know what you said.
PEMDAS is the order at which each operation is computed.
Evaluate the Parantheses. Rewrite in new line.
Evaluate the Exponents. Rewrite in new line.
Evaluate Multiplication. etc.
>>7748860
I've seen legitimate complaints about institutional problems it causes as well a material problems in most subjects except for math, which is the only subject really worth bothering with in school anyway.
I'd personally like a real explanation of what exactly is wrong with common core math other than "why would anyone want to know how to add in base 8?"
>>7748879
>I don't know what you said.
He said multiplication and division occur at the same time. Multiplying by 7 and then dividing by 6 is the same as multiplying by 6 and then dividing by 7. Same with addition and subtraction. So PEMDAS is really PE(MD)(AS)
>>7748879
Multiplication and division occur at the same time. So after you finish P then E, you do M and D at the same time, starting from the left and moving to right.
>>7748879
He's saying multiplication and division happen at the same time because it's all the same thing. It's all multiplication.
Division is just multiplication by the reciprocal of the right operand. Just like subtraction is just addition of the negation of the right operand.
Actually think about these things for yourself, don't just memorize things like PEDMAS that you learned in school.
>>7748860
Because
1) It isn't new, all the visualizations were already taught in grade schools 20 years ago. But now schools have to buy new books with shiny CC sticker or else.
2) It's even slower than before. Now the best students will get to geometry by the 10th or 11th grade.
3) It's obfuscated so most parents won't even realize it's slower and emptier than when they were in school.
>>7748880
>why would anyone want to know how to add in base 8
That's New Math from the 60s. I wish Common Core was the second coming of New Math
>>7748891
Even better. I guess that is technically factored form. Just goes to show how shit common core is, unless that picture is just a troll
>>7748898
>unless that picture is just a troll
>unless
You're a fucking retard m8.
>>7748872
>another person who doesnt know PEMDAS
It's not a strict logical order, it's a mnemonic tool.
>>7748902
Am I?
I'm not American and frankly, none of the retarded things they do surprise me anymore.
I do think it's a troll, but you just can't be sure with those dumbass Americans
>>7748910
The picture is correct tho
implicate multiplication is a thing you'll see in real life: 2x/2x = 1
>>7748910
>Am I?
Yes you are, those definitions lead to a string of contradictions, if you didn't see that and conclude that its a shirt troll then you're probably a retard.
>>7748910
Yes. It's a Photoshop from /pol/. You can see it by looking at the upper right corner of the projection, where the image clearly doesn't match. I've seen the original, but don't have it on my phone.
Common Core is a controversial attempt to improve American basic math education by fixing common standardized teaching methods across the country. However, these methods also specify exactly how basic arithmetic should be explained, and specific strategies for solving such problems, in ways that are rather abstract and confusing for young children and older teachers unfamiliar with the methods.
>>7748913
Then you were taught it wrong
>>7748920

way to shill
CC is a way to retard math education so teachers can get away with doing even less. That's all.
>>7748922
They shouldn't even teach PEDMAS.
They should teach PEMA and then explain that division is just multiplication where the right operand is reciprocated and subtraction is just addition where the right operand is negated.
>>7748914
>The picture is correct tho
No it isn't
>[math] i^2 = -1 ~~ \text{and} i-i=1 [/math]
>[math] i (i-i)=i [/math]
>[math] i^2 - i^2 = ( -1) - (-1) = -1+1=0 \therefore i=0 [/math]
And the we get a series of other contradictions [math] i=0 ~~\text{but}~~ i-i=1 ~~ \text{so} ~~ 1=0 [/math].
>>7748932
So we're in the zero ring. big deal
>>7748930
Most people struggle with simple fractions though. See: people thinking the 1/4 pounder was bigger than the 1/3 pounder. PEMDAS is fine if it's taught right. Sorry you were taught it wrong. It sucks when your teachers are wrong
>>7748932
> i - i = 1
But that's wrong. Complex numbers don't add like that. The only rule is that i^2 = -1, who came up with the i-i=-1 meme?
>>7748939
I think it's supposed to be a different i than the one you're thinking of. They should have used a different letter. It's wrong anyway, so it's not like it matters.
>>7748941
>thinking complex numbers are being taught to 5 year olds
>>7748937
The thing is, the majority (not even exaggerating) of people don't understand it that way, including elementary math teachers.
>>7748944
>thinking I think that.
>>7748945
Yeah, our education system sucks
>>7748805
So they're ignoring the order of operations? Why the fuck would they do this?
>>7748962
It's a troll
>>7748968
I see that now, I'm a bit 'tarded myself.
Why are some people saying the OP is shooped?
It is a legit pic.
>>7748799
>>7748817
Oh, pol...
>>7749204
this is a shoop
>>7748903
PEMDAS is taught literally only in America you slime
>>7748944
there is nothing complex about imaginary number arithmetic
>>7748939
