Tihange-1 and Tihange-2 are old fission reactors build in 1975 in Hoei, Belgium (see pic). Doel 1, Doel 2, Doel 3 are old fission reactors build in 1975 in the harbor of Antwerp.

They just started Tihange 2 in September.

A short list of what went wrong:

September 2015 - Tihange-1 waterpump failure. Reactor was shut down and it took 10 days to fix. Afterwards the reactor was restarted.

18th November. A fire was blazing in the Tihange-1. The reactor was shut down. Fire was put out. Reactor is up again.

MEANWHILE IN ANTWERP

24th November. Waterleak at the Doel 3 reactor in Antwerp. It's under control

24th November. The 1975 built Doel 2 reactor is made active again.

Tomorrow, 27th November, they are going to restart the 1975 built Doel 1 nuclear reactor.

______________________

Summed up; the highly unstable government of Belgium has just restarted 5 old nuclear reactors from 1975 and multiple technical failures have already happend in the last 2 months. I have a feeling this is not going to end well. These old reactors are VERY outdated. If a major accident happens here it might mean the end of all fission....
Luckily I live in the most northern province of the Netherlands. How far would a nuclear fallout zone be ?

>They just started Tihange 2 in September.

I mean Tihange 1.

>Waterpump failure
>Water leak

Does this mean I have to wear an airborne radiation suit when driving my car which does the same thing?

>November
You mean December?

1975 is a long time away, of course there will be failures. They probably won't make it critical until they are sure.

Aan de andere kant: het blijven wel Belgen...

yeah sorry I mean december. I always forget what month it is

Where are the fusion power fags?

Busy lying for grant money. It is their day job, after all.

Someone should restart this thread on /pol/ as a happening thread

They live for drama like this

>still trying to fire up this fossil

ahahaha. I live in Niedersachsen, Germany, and this worries me.

Guys

If the ones in Antwerpen melt Brussel will have to be evacuated.

That means no more European government
>>
Is there any place I can follow nuclear energy and physics news?

Sure thing bud, the lads over at >>>/pol/ follow all things /new/ and /happening/

I'll share my own experiences from working in the nuclear power industry here.

All reactors in question here are PWR, obviously.

These old reactors are on their last legs, pretty soon I doubt it will even be possible to run them, let alone profitable.

Most of these old reactors are running out of the parts needed to keep them running, particularly in terms of electronics. Each time something breaks there's always a worry in the maintenance department as to whether or not the manufacturer still makes that piece.

Quite often they just end up having to buy it off some old scrap dealer or seller on ebay.

It terms of profitability, every day that these reactors aren't running they're still costing millions and millions of pounds to maintain. When the machines are so old that they spend so much time offline that they don't produce enough power to pay for themselves then you can bet they'll be shut down.

As far as potential happenings: forget it, all the problems described don't suggest there will be any kind of reactor breach. Unless the fire was inside the reactor core then it was probably just an electrical fault setting fire to some rubbish or something like that. Even if the entire place caught fire and all the water pumps exploded it still wouldn't be enough to cause a meltdown.

Unless it results in a meltdown, or containment breach, the only thing that will get hurt is the company bottom line.

two instances of humans trying to do more than we can safely accomplish, ironic

What did you work in the nuclear power industry?

flandres master race here, the reason why we need to start up ancient reactors is because of decades of retarded decisions by leftist goverment.

current right wing goverment cant even talk about starting a investment plan to build a new plant because the hippies and greenfags in our country go bezerk.

Meanwhile the old goverments have sold of everything to a french company that is fucking us in the ass right now because we are completly depended on them for all our power.

In short, walloons fucked over begluim yet again.

sorry nederlanders, sorry dat de politiek in ons land een compleet achterlijk energieplan heeft gehad jaren lang en men nu pas wil oplossen sinds de rechte aan de macht zijn.

You now realize that belgiums HDI is predicted to DROP by 28 points in the next few years.

HOW did this country fuck up so badly?
>>
>>7747223
Belgian (Walloon) here

Socialists did most of it, honestly

If you are American, you are completely right to despise socialists. Yes, they do ruin absolutely fucking everything.
>>
>>7747234
America is socialist
>>
>>7747237
And in decline, thus proving my point

Anyways, on-topic: all of this is just Belgian leftists trying to scare the people into their agenda. Exploding transformers and a water leak are not fucking signs that the damn thing's gonna blow. The reactors are perfectly safe.
>>
>>7747246
I wish it did blow. Humans are hurting the environment

Didn't the liberals continuously push to privatise everything to the french companies?
>>
>>7747254
I wish humans would stop using so much power and resources to the point where they only need micro power plants of renewable nature.
>>

You first, turn off that computer and go live in the woods.
