Guys, I'm really worried about my son's education. Friday he came back from school and told me his teacher introduced "imaginary numbers". What the fuck is this bullshit? Back in my time we learned real math and not this new progressive politically motivated pseudo math.

Nice b8.
>>
>i-i = 1
>>
>>7703450
Even though this is b8 I wanna know
>i-i=1
how do they arrive at this? or is this part of the ruse?
>>
>>7703464
>>7703465
You need it, or else it doesn't work out.

(x+iy)(x-iy)
= x^2 + ixy - ixy - (iy)^2
= x^2 + (i-i)xy +y^2
= x^2 + xy + y^2
>>
>>7703493
How are you going to math easier for niggers when the (presumably) white people on this board don't know what the fuck they're looking at?
>>
>>7703493
But, a-b = 1 means a = b+1. How can i be equal to itself plus one?
>>
>>7703593
It's i*-i, not i - i
>>
>>7703593
It's an imaginary number. The laws of normal numbers don't apply here.
>>
>>7703606
So then how do we know that i + i = 2i?
>>
>>7703641
Not required in this exercise.
>>
>>7703606
First, there are "normal" numbers. There are the integers, the rationals, the reals and the complexes, along with others, but there are certainly no "normal" numbers. Second to say that an "i" doesn't behave like a nornal number is misleading when it behaves much like a variable "x" you might see in high school algebra , in that you can manipulate it in all the same ways, but it comes with the added feature that i^2 = -1. The bit about i+(-i)=1, written ambiguously, is simply not true.
>>
>>7703683
*there are NO "normal" numbers, sorry
>>
>>7703659
With complex number that is how it works. And while variables may change between problems, the laws of math don't.
>>
>>7703683
>>7703696
Can't you read, guys? It says the number is imaginary. It doesn't need to obey the laws of math. This is how common core makes math easier. It gives the students more freedom for creativity.
>>
>>7703708
Okay, so is 7 larger than 3+21i?
>>
>>7703450
Neither of those techniques yield a correct answer.
Pretty stellar bait.
>>
Well thats fucking retarded. Now you have to cram real math into your kids head AND make sure he can pass this bullshit

complex numbers aren't ordered. is /sci/ getting more retarded.
>>
>>7704149
Integers are complex numbers though, since 5 really = 5+0i. I assume you mean just numbers where the real and imaginary parts are both non-zero.
>>
>>7703450
>tying imaginary numbers to common core
great bait, you should take it to /pol/, they'll fucking devour that shit whole lmao, they think common core is a jewish conspiracy

Will /sci/ ever be as good as /lit/?

Almost all numbers are normal.

>Neither of those techniques yield a correct answer.

(x+y+√xy)(x+y-√xy)=(x+y)^2-(√xy)^2=x^2+y^2+2xy-xy=x^2+y^2+xy
(x+℩y)(x-℩y)=x^2+y^2+℩xy-℩xy = x^2+y^2+(℩-℩)xy=x^2+y^2+xy
>>
My kid just learned this in his Algebra II class, and when he was explaining it to me he basically said that i = sqrt(-1). It's like a really easy to show the square root of negative numbers. sqrt(-4) = 2i.

Consequently, i^2 = -1 and like >>7703598 pointed out, i*-i would equal 1.
>>
>>7704493
haha i still did it tho >>>/pol/57702756
