Serious question.

Would a solar shade help solve or at least slow down Global Warming? What would be the benefits and disadvantages of such scheme?

The UN seems to think this seemingly insane idea likely, since it has moved to banned any type of "planetary solar shade".

If the shield is outside of our atmosphere, yes.

One thing you have to keep in mind is that the sun is so far away that the beams of light are virtually parallel. In order to block 3% of the suns's rays you would need an object 3% the surface are of a circle with the Earth's radius. That's a big-ass fucking floating satellite.

Just an idea, how terrible will inducing a small scale nuclear winter be?

Wouldn't there be enough residue to block enough light, or is it not that simple?

The problem is that there are just too many unknowns. One overlooked subtlety of atmospheric factors and we could make things a thousand times worse.

We didn't know CFCs would punch holes in the ozone, we didn't combusting too many things too quickly would cause CO2 to build up faster than it can be converted back and cause global warming and we don't know what the long-term effects of whatever you propose putting into the atmosphere in order to increase Earth's albedo is going to be.

it wouldnt have to be outside the atmosphere if it was painted white on the top

It's a really dangerous and impossible to implement idea.

From the ground maybe. Satellites COULD do it, but you'd need a lot, they'd have to be very synchronized, space is full of pieces of shit flying around, and we still want to fly our rockets sometimes.

I think the real issue would be the view. How do you see stars through a giant space umbrella?

A: You don't

Check it. Sulfuric acid could work better than a satellite. You can just fly over in a jet and dump it and it will fall out of the atmosphere so you can titrate.

It's just...you know...toxic as fuck.

Who's going to stop me loading L1 with hidden chaff bombs when some kickstarted jack off sets up a cheap micro sat launching service in 2030?

Two things:
1-lots of tiny umbrellas instead of one huge ass umbrella
2- you can put it in something similar to geostationary orbit, it would follow daylight instead of wasting surface coverage by partially being behind the earth

This is the ultimate failing of representative government: rule by the plebs. They'll shoot down legitimately good ideas because they just don't get it.

Not being mentally retarded would work better.

Why not just paint our rooftops white

a pretty good idea considering it could be a weapon far more effective than nukes ever could be at destroying a country's economy without collateral infrastructure damage

Well, we did know. We just didn't care.
