Career advice for any chemist: make money and drink every night. Don't get old.
and read the latest organic chem journals every fucking day even though you don't give a fuck about asaps anymore and if you get a phd it will likely be is worthless in syn, nano, or anything but comp & ab initio bullshit
Kill the "scientific interest" as soon as you can and just leave it to hobby work. Get into industry as fast as possible.
Bonus Contest: Whoever can give me a source on how much nicolau makes at rice, I'll buy you something nice on amazon.
Whoa that dude is pretty based /justlikecooking at blogspot dot com 2012/09/nicolaou-to-rice-official.html?m=1
Shit he might be getting paid more than a football coach
does drinking alcohol preserve you?

Well according to my ukrainian colleagues it is useful when working with radionuclides as it helps flush them out

So do I win the prize?

Not quite broski. You're close though...I'm sure it is published somewhere. I haven't been able to find it. I am specifically looking for his salary for the year of 2014. 2015 will earn you an extra $50 in whatever you want to order, though I assume that info isn't yet available.

But I really really really like synthetic organic. what do I do?

>I'm sure it is published somewhere.
Since Rice is a private school, they may not have to disclose that information to the public.
>>7663746
Shit mate, Rice is a private university, that's gonna be hard to find.
>>7663669
please OP I have many questions.
I like drinking, a lot so I got that checked. I'm only 19 so I'm not gonna be old for awhile. but if I don't give a fuck about money and I'm content doing shitty lab work for 20K a year the rest of my life, is it still not worth getting a Ph.D? Do I just need to stand out from my peers, do I need awards and stuff?

Also I will personally steal those files from Rice if you get me a job.
>be me, be pretty decent at chem
>/sci/ tells me chem is oversaturated and I won't find a job
>/sci/ tells me chemists make bank
wat do?
> be me, chemical engineer
> not interested in industry

Faggot. Just kill yourself already.
I can't get exact numbers, but according to the Cancer Prevention Research Institute of Texas, the institute that paid for Nicolaou, in FY 2014
Rice university received $10,971,318 under 5 different grants. Some or all of this is going to Nicolaou.
We know from one of his recent papers that he acknowledges CPRIT funding:
http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/anie.201504337/abstract
Which supports this hypothesis
There is probably more information here.
