Is bacteriophage phi X174 DNA a message from an extraterrestrial

>The possibility that biological material may serve as a medium of extraterrestrial communication is discussed and DNA from bacteriophage phi X174 is investigated to determine whether such a message could be derived from it. It is speculated that advanced civilizations could manipulate viral or bacterial DNA so that its base sequence would carry a coded message in addition to specifying compounds necessary for survival and send a microorganism containing the message to a planet with conditions similar to those of the sending planet, where the microorganism would replicate. Two dimensional pictures were drawn of an overlapping gene section of phi X174 DNA using bases represented by four colors, and by digital systems according to chemical nature (purine or pyrimidine) or base pair.

So wait, like, Ebola is an alien?
>>
Alien here
We have no reason to send coded messages since you can't decode them. You haven't even managed to decode some of your languages. We prefer direct contact if need be.
>>
>>6914576
So what was the message?
>>
>>6914580
no, of course not. this is a cool research paper on how you'd go about decoding alien messages.

ΦX174 is pretty fucking famous!

>The phi X 174 (or ΦX174) bacteriophage was the first DNA-based genome to be sequenced. This work was completed by Fred Sanger and his team in 1977. In 1962, Walter Fiers and Robert Sinsheimer had already demonstrated the physical, covalently closed circularity of ΦX174 DNA.[2] Nobel prize winner Arthur Kornberg used ΦX174 as a model to first prove that DNA synthesized in a test tube by purified enzymes could produce all the features of a natural virus, ushering in the age of synthetic biology.[3][4] In 2003, it was reported by Craig Venter's group that the genome of ΦX174 was the first to be completely assembled in vitro from synthesized oligonucleotides.[5] The ΦX174 virus particle has also been successfully assembled in vitro.[6] Recently, it was shown how its highly overlapping genome can be fully decompressed and still remain functional.

Thanks for sharing OP, good to read papers that are fun and speculative sometimes
>>

We’ve decoded wast majority of them. Only few that have too little samples left are left undecoded.
>>

>Thanks for sharing OP, good to read papers that are fun and speculative sometimes
no probs. I love this stuff as well since it expands your toolbox and thinking as well.
>>
>>6914591

Are you sure you understand this language?
>>6914593
How do you plan on decoding a language entirely unrelated to your own with no references?
>>
>>6914600
I was expecting he was one of those "reach out and reveal yourself" kind of direct contact faggots. Real aliens would just mindprobe world leaders by injecting things up their ass holes.

Anyway, OP's paper is kind of a neat concept, but sending viruses out seems like a pretty inefficient way of sending even encoded messages.
>>
>>6914600
>How do you plan on decoding a language entirely unrelated to your own with no references?
That's a great question and I have no idea. I guess it would depend on what the message is. It will be probably sent as a string of bits (simplest way to encode something) and then from there it's not that obvious what to do. Imagine someone sends you a ZIP file before we invented LZW compression... any attempt to decode the bits would be pointless.

See the pic on left from this paper about what the message might look like... they're guessing it could be a 2D image.

>>6914605
>Anyway, OP's paper is kind of a neat concept, but sending viruses out seems like a pretty inefficient way of sending even encoded messages.
It reminded me of vonNeumann Probes. Seems like an incredibly cheap and and efficient way to spread life (which is the ultimate message) around.

News story from days ago:

http://arstechnica.com/science/2014/11/dna-survives-a-ride-into-spaceon-the-exterior-of-a-rocket/

DNA can survive in space just fine and even the re-entry on a rocket. Amazing really.
>>
>>6914617
pic of what the 2D pics of phi X174 nucleotides look like.
>>
>>6914617
My only beef with that theory is the lack of organic molecules that the DNA strands would be able to work with once they reach a planet/comet.

Though, I do have to admit, DNA have to be some of the most impressive chemical chains in the universe.
>>
>>6914628
organic molecules seems to be widespread through the universe:

goddammit OP can't you do anything right? Post the DNA for the damn thing so we can try decoding it!(Protip: it's not a message from aliens)

junk dna is deprecated

its called non-coding dna these days and it doesnt play a role in protein synthesis

except that was wrong too

turns out """junk"" dna regulates gene expression

I mean, it's a cool idea. It'd make more sense if they wrote a paper about how we could encode messages in phage DNA, then it'd wouldn't sound crazy.

It'd be funny if the genes coding for rubisco was facilitated by aliens, it'd be like terraforming.

nig you have a lot more samples available (like virtually infinite) if the language is still being used. also if we are talking about an advanced alien race, they must have books with pictures and shit. suppose there is a book with a bunch of images of planets and crap, then you know that it's about astronomy, and if for example the word "xxhgylinuaa" appears often in the section with pictures moons, we can safely say that "xxhgylinuaa" means moon (obv they aren't gonna use the english alphabet, but I don't have an alien keyboard, alien chars are not part of unicode, and you probably don't have the necessary fonts available on your system anyway).
you can also just point at like fucking rocks and signal them that they better say the name of the object.
oh and btw were you born with the english language in your brain? and how do you think people made dictionaries for all the ching-chong-bing-bong languages out there?
