CS people freak me out.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2851663/Are-brink-creating-artificial-life-Scientists-digitise-brain-WORM-place-inside-robot.html
They will destroy the world with this AI shit.
>Are we on the brink of creating artificial life? Scientists digitise the brain of a WORM and place it inside a robot
> * The OpenWorm global project is making a 'digital' worm
> * Their project is recreating the neurons and cells in C. elegans
> * It is the simplest organism we know of but has similarities to humans
> * By making a digital worm the team hope to create artificial life
> * They have implanted the digital 'mind' of the worm into a Lego machine
> * In a video it acts and behaves just like the worm would in the real world
> * Next year the team will allow people to download their own digital worm
This shit will lead to nothing but trouble.
I don't see what the fascination with AI is all about anyway. We just need faster computers. We don't need computers capable of mimicking or replacing us. We don't need to create life, we have too much already.
They need to figure out better ways for humans to fundamentally interact with computers.

Besides that, AI is a pretty big term for what is actually happening, especially these brain simulations with this abstraction level of the brain.

Oh come on mate.
jesus that's cool as fuck, I guess the daily mail isn't that bad after all
This is cool as shit. Bring on the robot overlords. Somewhere between here and there will be celebrity blowjob robots so it's all worth it.

Every news organization bugs a catchy headline to get your attention
That's why you gotta actually read the fucking article
We weren't put on this Earth to suffer.
We were put here to suffer and do this.
>>6907520
blowjobs suck get it i dont
So they just turn it on and it starts learning and being a worm or is it programmed in?
>>6907663
The ability to learn is a program. We're programmed by the environment to gather information about the environment to sustain ourselves.
>>6907664
I should have been more clear, I meant is it setup to learn or is it setup to pretend to be a worm.
>>6907665
It is effectively an autonomous worm made out of legos.
>>6907483
Unless something has changed considerably I don't think this is anything more than pure click-bait. C. elegans is still no where close to being understood.
Here's the OpenWorm guy talking about it and AI in general.

The guys talking is David Dalrymple, listed as contributor over at http://www.openworm.org/people.html
This isn't bait, they've just been working on it for the last few years and made progress.
>Next year
Why not now? Oh right because it's a fucking hoax.
>>6909031
Yeah but that LEGO robot supposedly based on the worm is not associated with him or OpenWorm and its claim that it works exactly like C. elegans is a load of hooey.

Well I still don't completely buy it.
This comment is interesting though
>Dan: I don't think any - this is not a classical NN, it is a simulated connectome. The "programming" is all on the individual neurons talking to one another so removing any one, could result in different behaviors. I did two ablation experiments (we eliminated specific neurons) based on papers that did the same in the biological worm and found that we got similar behaviors. This also illustrates how a connectome in lower animals probably needs to be wired fully in order for the animal to survive? Regarding the Braitenberg vehicle - I would like to think that we proved his hypothesis to some extent.
you mean its possible for me and my wife to stay immortal and be with eachother for eternity ? yay!
>>6909127
The connectome engine that the lego thing runs on is a separate project from OpenWorm. The lego guy is claiming his robot is a 100% replica of C. elegans which I don't completely buy.

Kek, and people really think we're going to easily be able to program "directives" and shit like that into AI. No one's going to understand what these connectomes mean, AI are just going to be animals.

UK confirmed to not know what 'organism' means.

>They need to figure out better ways for humans to fundamentally interact with computers.
They seem to be well on their way to getting the C. elegans brain to interact with a lego avatar, you nitwit.
The only problem with digital consciousness is that evil people will be able to subject others to torments beyond belief. 10 minutes stuck inside a torture program will seem like an eternity.
>>6907492
We'll never be able to travel and transport massive cargos throughout the universe if we're having to sustain our flesh form.
I think modern humans are going to hand the baton off to the machines we create.

It's dailymail bro...
>>6909628
all hail the coming singularity
allowing an AI to learn for itself using iteration, data set interpolation, and genetic algorithms will be how the first AI is created.
it's been done on a smaller scale. Imagine this experiment, but on a scale of speech, talking, thinking, conversing.

Shut up, OP. Think about how amazing the world will be when a perfect pure logical race inhabits it instead of the fucking monkeys flinging shit at each other that we have today.
Can relatively simple nerve nerworks be conidered brains?
>>6911887
Not really but ganglia and brains are both made of neurons.
Didn't they do this with fruit flies half a decade ago?
How is this any more world ending than it was then? Please stop sensationalizing shitty sensationalist science articles. They're like internet trolls, just ignore them to make it go away.
So...they uploaded its consciousness to a machine?

I'm honestly assuming an AI worm would be nothing but a few simple "if" statements once the conditions have been met.
Do worms actually learn or do they only have the capacity to survive?
>>6908237
I've seen hotter children
>>6912393
no, you need neural networks to simulate brain function.

I really want Taiga so badly right now. Can't believe a 25 year old (Quantum, Mathematical, Theoretical) Physics MSci is saying this right now.
>>6907483
In all honesty, I don't know anything about CS, but as a human, I do know a lot about the human race. And one thing I know is that the human race is a lot more likely to destroy the world than any AI or anything like that. AI would probably at most destroy the human race alone, but better the human race die, then all sentient life on earth. I mean, do you really think the human race will survive another 10,000 years on this planet without causing a nuclear war or irreversible environmental damage? Historically speaking, human societies don't learn from there mistakes until its far too late. Look at Rome, look at Easter Island, look at the Mayans, look at a dozen other examples. Now realize that with the technology we have today, when shit hits the fans, its not going to be just our society that is ruined, but the entire planet itself. If you're not a selfish species-ist asshole, your admit that AI replacing human life is probably objectively the best thing for this world.

I don't know about you, but I got something that's called survival instinct, and I'm not going to ignore it.
Humanity fuck yeah, we can destroy the earth if we want to, we're number one.
>>6907772
What this anon said. As a hobbyist researcher of C elegans NN I can say that we are still in the dark about its NN. For example we dont know many of the inhibitory / excitatory connections. Machine learning techniques could help predict / solve these connection properties.
>tfw shit-tier programmer
>>6907492
>Implying we couldn't create simple-AI robots to carry out and maintain working jobs
We would no longer need a working class.
Everyone could be patrician as fuck.
The population level would be brought down.
Mankind would be evenly re-distributed across the world.
