Sup bros.

I'm a biology student, and I fucking hate life, and I mean this literally. I feel like I have looked into the abyss, and the abyss has looked back into me. I fucking hate animals. I hate living systems. I hate diversity. I hate conservation. I hate conservationists. I hate "sustainability". I especially hate vegans.

I actually love biology, I love the study of living systems, but I hate that the science has gotten so convoluted with the activism. Biologists, almost by definition, must be "in favor" of biodiversity, promoting biodiversity, promoting conservation of ecosystems, etc. I fucking hate it.

Now, my nihilism isn't unique, absolutely not. I don't consider myself a special snowflake in that sense, but I do consider myself a special snowflake in that I think I'm the only person in my department who would argue against conservation, for example. I'm like the only person who would write projects and give presentations where I argue *against* the two "traditional" cornerstones of modern academic biology--that of "yay to biodiversity!", and "yay to conservationism of that biodiversity!". And let me tell you, while arguing against conservation may be common among conservative and right-winged persons, a biologist against conservation is...not fucking heard of. It seems so counter-intuitive.

When considering enthalpy and entropy (you physics boys know what I'm talking about), there is no way in my opinion to view life as a "good" thing. I almost have the mentality of a comic book supervillian, who wants to "purify" the universe by eliminating all life. But the funny part is that *this is fucking true*. Life is all about reducing the free energy of a system, and of course increasing the entropy of the system, at the selfish expense of lowering/maintaining the entropy of its volume. Any way you slice it, especially in any moral context, is that life is fucking evil. It's evil, and how can life be allowed to continue unless it's okay to be evil? And what is natural selection but better systems at lowering enthalpy forcing inferior systems to become extinct?

Any way I fucking look at it, I hit pragmatic brick walls. For example, I have a simple project to work on, and I end up hitting this wall because I enter a series of feedback loops which conclude with "Fuck life." And I don't mean "fuck life" in a fatalist kind of way. I mean "fuck life" like "FUCK YOU ELEPHANTS, GO EXTINCT ALREADY", or "FUCK YOU PANDAS, AND MAY CHINAMEN USE YOUR BALLS FOR TRADITIONAL MEDICINE". I hate animals. Animals suck at lowering free energy. Fucking primates at Oak Ridge National Laboratory synthesized plutonium 238 the other day. THE AMOUNT OF FREE ENERGY LOST GOING INTO THAT BLOWS MY FUCKING MIND. As a biology student, an organism being able to produce plutonium 238...you don't get it. I study diatoms. I study algae and photosynthesis. Photosynthesis ultimately produces sugar. My diatoms and algae produce sugars. And these fucking primates at Oak Ridge produced plutonium 238. When I look at this outside of the box...I can't stop thinking that humans are the greatest shit since sliced bread.

Who cares about some fucking tropical tree frog that's going to go extinct? WHO CARES?! PRIMATES CREATED PLUTONIUM 238. PRIMATES CREATED THIS SUPER AWESOME NVIDIA GPU I HAVE. Like...the magnificience of primates is...unparalleled. And as a biologist, having this mentality is, in all honestly, detrimental to my future career. In a way, other biologists don't take me seriously. Why should they? They have no obligation to take me seriously even if I, along with many others, are correct in our views. The sun will end most life on Earth in around 1 billion years--not when the sun becomes a red giant, but far earlier, when the surface temperature raises but enough degrees to cause protein denaturation to be thermodynamically favorable. That isn't a high temperature. That's less than boiling point, even 80 degrees or so would kill most multicellular life on Earth's surface. Who cares about biodiversity when it's going to end? But who cares, since what matters is *now*, and not the future? But if sustainability is maintaining the "now" into the future, then sustainability is a moot point.

This shit is just fucking bothering me, and I need to tell someone because no one gives a fuck. And you guys don't give a fuck, but at least I got this off my chest for now...until this post falls off page 10, and contributes to the increased entropy and future heat death of the universe. The greatest trick life ever pulled was making everyone think it was a circle. There is no circle. It's a god damned straight line, and you're hobbling around with a broken leg think it's a circle. God, I hate life.

I sound like a fucking child.

bio diversity will be of a huge advantage to us (humans) in the future because we will have more raw data genetically speaking with which to study our origins and possible improvements upon ourselves. So unless your suicidal tendencies have stretched beyond your own mind, or you are an alien (not one of the good one's) then shut the fuck up and learn your lesson and >>7755374 take some benzos. Although maybe you just posted this in the hopes that somebody would tell you to take drugs and override your conscious which I'm sure some people do on 4 chan.

I just don't delude myself with the myth that we care about animals. I sure as hell don't care about animals. I'd rather that they didn't suffer or anything, but I don't really care about the survival of a species for their purposes.

Now, why I do care about biodiversity and conservation is because it benefits humans. I want our species to be better than the rest, and continue for as long as we can. I don't give a fuck if African tree frogs die out. But if that throws the ecosystem out of whack and it becomes this huge feedback loop of bad things begetting bad things until it harms humans, then I care.

I like humans. Even the assholes.
>>
>>7755314
It makes no sense at all to just take some absolute, indifferent physical concept and assign a moral value to that. Entropy is not good or bad.
>>
>>7755407
That would be swell. I'd love to be friends with octopi on equal terms. They seem like cool animals.

>>7756026
Surely you care about animals from an academic point of view? If you don't even find biology just *interesting* what are you even doing studying it?
>>
>I actually love biology, I love the study of living systems, but I hate that the science has gotten so convoluted with the activism.
What you should have studied is biotechnology/bio engineering.

This thread should be a wake up call to everyone still having any respect for biologists

Entropy will not be stopped with or without life. The fact that you think your puny and insignificant existence has any remote bearing on the ebb of the cosmos is pretentious at best.
>>
>>7756115
This. A single star produces more entropy in a single second than all humans could produce ever.

Why? Because that is the way of the fucking future. I too hate the "Nature is so natural" idea of today; but This is the reason i study Biotechnology. I'll Fucking try to bring Transhumanism closer to us. Also, Making nature your bitch is kind of an awesome thing.

Alright I don't know much about Biology, but isn't biodiversity necessary for the ecosystem to remain stable under a shift of surrounding conditions and as a result also for (our) food supply?
>>
You're fucked in the head mate. I mean thoroughly fucked.

I've read it ... well what can I say keep your chin up bro, you do it for others regardless what you do just see it like that.
>>
>>7756958

Since when are ecosystems ever stable? Do you even evolution by natural selection, bro?

>>7756955

Life doesn't ask permission. At least, life is discourteous. At most, it's evil. Simple, easy, basic.
>>
>>7756987
>Since when are ecosystems ever stable? Do you even evolution by natural selection, bro?
Stable as in it can sustain itself. Like if you removed all insects from one ecosystem the critters would starve and then larger animals starve etc.

>Life doesn't ask permission. At least, life is discourteous. At most, it's evil. Simple, easy, basic.
That doesn't make the slightest of sense.
>>
>>7756958

I'll clarify.

>isn't biodiversity necessary for the ecosystem to remain stable under a shift of surrounding conditions

Biodiversity isn't "necessary" for anything because ecological niches are temporary, as well as the overall ecosystem is temporary.

Biodiversity is the result of adapting to a niche that is going to eventually close. This makes generalists superior organisms. They are not subject to such specific niches, like a hummingbird being dependent on a specific beak size and shape to feed on a particular type of flower.

Diversity exists because niches close and new niches open. Diversity exists because generalists fill niches after specialists (e.g., what biologists laud as biodiversity) die due to their adaptive inferiority.

My problem is that there are institutes which would rather spend money and resources trying to save fucking endangered tropical tree frogs instead of doing something more productive.

I mean, the fucking Cecil the Lion was an anthropocentric identity crisis of unparalleled proportions. What would our Australopithecine ancestors have thought of such First World tears?
>>
>>7756991

Are you a Libertarian? Do you believe in property laws and self ownership? Do you believe in animal rights? Do you not see conflicts in this shit?

The problem is that the rabbit hole goes so deep that everyone has stopped bothering to care about how deep it goes.
>>
>>7757003
You're literally timecube levels of delisional. So far your only argument is that
>life is evil because entropy or something

it is actually entropically favorable for the formation of the building blocks of life and for the propagation of life itself

no living thing actually lowers the entropy of the universe, so any temporary entropy loss with "creating life" is assuredly regained and more.

so in a sense, the more animals we have, the more we contribute to the heat death of the universe, so killing them is actually counterproductive to your goals.
>>
>>7755528
This. It's like we're robots just now learning how to code ourselves, and instead of sifting through the mohntains of hard drives we're living on, we're just smashing them to pieces. There is so much more to be learned about the fundamentals of biology from the biodiversity that surrounds us, and potentially groundbreaking discoveries are being lost every day.
Plus, humanity simply won't last very long on a planet that is completely used for agriculture and cities.
>>
>>7757010

I mean, off the bat life is evil because it does not respect property rights.

Now, if "life" had a social system which eliminated property rights, like those of social insects, then you wouldn't have a problem.

Are you aware that courts and legal systems exist? We know they are fictitious constructs built for pragmatic purposes, but OJ Simpson was still found not guilty even though he killed his wife, and Michael Jackson was still found not guilty even though he played with little kids' genitals.

Life is evil because it lowers enthalpy without asking permission of the owner of that free energy. That's stealing. Unless there are no property rights, in which case...fuck Libertarians?

I am delusional, you are correct. I'm trying to deal with this very unproductive insanity.
>>
>>7757015

Yes, I know, they lower the local entropy while increasing the entropy of the system. I'm writing exactly about this, hence the existential crisis.

>no living thing actually lowers the entropy of the universe

Hahahaha. And I've been called an idiot so many times in this here thread.

Could you imagine if you actually believed this? If you were actually emotionally invested in this? You would be the most depressed person on the face of the Earth. So, you *don't* actually care, because you can't care. I mean, the amount of microbes that your immune system kills...I mean, believers in Jainism would kill themselves if they know what was happening in their own bodies.

How about colonizing other planets?

Jesus, only 6 million years ago we were fucking apes. That's nothing. Think of where the next 6 million years will take us. But if we fuck up the biological systems that help support us then its going to hammer our progress somewhat, hmm?

Christ, think of the prime directives. Survive and reproduce.

Long before the Universe burns out in a heat death or a Big Crunch, we will have reached God like powers, possibly have become pure energy beings.

Think we going to stand for obliteration?

No, our descendants will just marshal the energy and mass of the Universe and create it all over again.

Just like they did last time.

Mwhaha!

sounds like you have a case of the "faggotry radiation" that permeates all the pseudo-scientists you see in biology. best bet is to step up your game and get something a bit more rigorous like microbio, molecular, biochemistry, etc. when you get in those areas those issues you have will start to vanish.

i am a biologist who gives no fucks about conservation and ecology, there are many out there but instead of constantly shilling on the media and shit we are busy working privately making bank
