/SCI/ it's about time we talk about Mental Illness denial.

- Many Scientists believe Mental Illness does not exist
- Many Scientists reject the idea that all things labeled Mental Illnesses are brain diseases
- Many Scientists lump Psychiatry in with Psychology, Sociology, etc... and believe all Social Sciences/Medicines are the same

What do you think contributes to this anti-scientific belief among Scientists?
>>
>>8206329

I don't think they reject the existence of a disease, but they reject the way in which psychiatric disorders are categorized.

There's a lack of study on the mechanics of the human brain. As soon as we can learn more about the human brain a more found science can be established.
>>
Primary Counter Arguments

1. Intentional Misinformation
- Chemical imbalance is a hypothesis, not a working theory; never tested
- There is no data to support automatic lifelong diagnosis
- Less than 10% diagnosed agree, and most of those are non-delusional based diagnosis
- Genetics can at most account for only 13% diagnosed; prelimiary error % is high in a new science
- FMRIs have not been scientifcally proven to accurately diagnosis psychiatric 'diseases'
- The Disease Model of Behavior has not been proven and has obvious holes in it's reasoning
- Bulverism and Hyperbolic Discounting of Client Research, Testimony and Reasoning
- Overdiagnosis is serious issue tied to demand, control, obediance and personal incredulity

2.) Issues with Fallacies in the Diagnostic/Stigma Process
- Appeal to Stone
- Bulverism
- Argument from Report/Assertion
- Argument Circular Reporting
- Argument from Ignorance/Silence
- False Dilemma
- False Attribution Error
- Cluster Illusion
- Hyperbolic Discounting
- Appeal to Probability [False Occam's Razor]
- Hasty Generalization
- Poisoning the Well
- Shifting the Burden of Proof
- Personal Incredulity [False Occam's Razor]
- False Equivocation
- False Equivocation of Correlation and Causation
- Appeal to Motive
- Reductio ad Aburdem
- Appeal to Availability Heuristic
- Psychologists Fallacy
- Appeal to Commonality
- Appeal to Common Cause
- Ignoring/Ignorance of Common Cause
- Biased Sampling
- Circular Reasoning
- Begging the Question
- Conflation
- Cherry Picking
- Loaded Questions/Demands/Assertions
- Affirming the Consequent
- Denying the Antecedent
>>
3.) Issues with Authoritive Psychological Effects of Diagnosticians
- Mindguard
- Cultural Hegemony
- Moral Panic
- In-group Narcissism/Out-group Bullying/Suspicion
- Expectation Bias
- Dunning Kruger Effect
- Margaret Mitchell Effect
- Escalation of Commitment
- Baseless Over-confidence
- Confabulation
- Scapegoating
- Victim Blaming
- Blame Shifting
- Fantasy Intuition + Machiavellianism
- Rejection of Counter-Evidence [Boomerang/Backlash Effect]
- Catch 22
- Procedural Pressure/Intertia
- Egocetric Determinism
- Time/Responce Pressure
- Appeal to Doxa [False Occam's Razor]
- Social Inference

4.) Issues with the Chemical Imbalance Hypothesis
- Chemical Reactions are reactions, not Primers [Primary causes/initiators]
- A lack of Aspirin isn't the Initial Cause of a Headache; Aspirin Deficiency is not a disease
- Sedatives and Stimulants do not Correct, they Damage and Distract
- There has been zero proof or even proposed tests for the Chemical Imbalance Hypothesis
- Double Blind Diagnosis suggest "Suspicion Backtracking"; not "Specific Pathological Disease"
- Overdiagnosis isn't being challenged, contested or tested [double blind]

5.) Issues with False Support by Clients
- Depedant Clients; Appeal to Fear; Learned Helplessness
- Self-defeating; Learned Helplessness
- Histrionic
- False Equivocation; Dangerous Existential Claims; Hyperbole
- Appeal to Doxa/Authority/Narrative [Shifting Responsibility]
>>
6.) Extended Issues with the Diagnositic Process
- Dishonest Forced Pattern Matching
- Circular Logic
- Bulverism and Hyperbolic Discounting of Client Research, Testimony and Reasoning
- Diagnosis by non-psychiatrists, then passed to quasi-absentee psychiatrists
- Pharma money insentives to extend process to nurses, psychologists, social workers, etc.
- Appeal to Ridicule/Presumption
- Refusal to check claims/stand corrected
- Exploitation and Coercion for Grant/Insurance/Control Fraud
- Shifting the Burden of Proof; Argument by Stone
- Common cultural, political or philosophical differences with diagnostician

7.) Legal and Epistemological Arguments
- Legislating Freedom by Double Standards via Shifting Burden of Proof
- Catch 22 Legal Hypocrisy; Social Usefullness; Abuse of the Diseased?
- Suspected Legal Rights w/o Trial [truth is "diagnosed" without investigation]
- Right to question authority/tradition/popculture is a segregated right
- Right to diversity is a segregated right
- Segregated rights are violations of the UNs Declaration of Human Rights
- Damages caused by medications/social stigma could have serious complications

8.) Evidence Based Practice; Critical Psychiatry
- Double blind diagnosis
- Proving/checking claims per case
- Diagnosticians screened for errors/inconsistancy/dry-diagnosing in records/process
- Diagnosticians trained in fallacies, biases, heuristic errors and authoritative errors
- Screened for differential diagnosis
>>
9.) Biggest problems summed up
- Dry diagnosis
- Poor diagnostic process; no cross-checking/differentials
- Fallacies and biases
- Applied force; learned dependancy/helplessness
- Stigma; segregation ; leads to severe dysphoria/dysenfranchisement/abuse and personality changes
- Overdiagnosis; overdrugging - brain damage; tardive,
- Intentional Misleading Propaganda
- Oppression leads to severe dysphoria/dysenfranchisement
- Huge history of made up cultural, political and social disorders
- Power imabalance/abuse of power for personal gain

>- Many Scientists believe Mental Illness does not exist

No, they really don't. Unless by "many" you mean "a small portion of the population."

> - Many Scientists reject the idea that all things labeled Mental Illnesses are brain diseases

That is actually true to a degree. Some mental illness can be explained in part by neurochemistry (lack of serotonin causes depression, too much dopamine causes schizophrenia, etc.), but yeah, mental illness isn't perfectly understood.

- Many Scientists lump Psychiatry in with Psychology, Sociology, etc... and believe all Social Sciences/Medicines are the same

I don't know if that's true or not.

>Some mental illness can be explained in part by neurochemistry (lack of serotonin causes depression, too much dopamine causes schizophrenia, etc.),

There is zero science to back that up.

>mental illness isn't perfectly understood.
Aside from schizophrenia and ASPD, it doesn't

Its a solid fact that psychiatry and psychology are just fascism masquerading as science and medicine.

There are plenty of anti-authoritarians that are pro-reason and science that are attacked by families, schools, social services, etc... because they question cultural fascism and double standards.

Eventually those people show emotions.

Emotions are not illness, even/especially if they interfere with corrupt societies.

They don't believe mental illness doesn't exist, they have just admitted that psychotherapy and psychological is the closest thing we have to curing and treating those afflicted with serious mental conditions. It may help, it may not.

It's essentially chemo, it may not work, it may work. It's the best we have until we find a cure for the cancer. In a similar way, psychotherapy is the closest thing we have, until neurology provides some tangible and well-rewarded results. This has been stated by scientists, and also by psychologists. That being said, psychology is not a science. It is an art, much like medicine.
>>
I think a major problem with mental illness research is that whether or not it is called an illness is being determined by politics, not by any reasonable definition.

Is being an idiot a disease?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intellectual_disability

Homosexuality used to be considered a disease.
Was it? Was it changed because of political pressure?

Are psychopaths just ill, and not ""actually"" psychos?

Most human mental defficiencies can be traced to the brain, and classified. Then the class is called a disease and the people in the class are simply ill. This can be done with any defficiency. There may be merit in some areas but not in others, but at the moment which areas is politically motivated.
>>
>>8206761
And there's also the thing about god belief allegedly being traceable to a part of the brain.

Basically that any individual behaviour or quirk can be identified as a certain characteristic of the brain and then they can say "this is a disease", without any real thought.

the best we have at our disposal, and thus subject to other soft-sciences, such as politics, philosophy and sociology.
>>>8206703
>>
>>8206776
That doesn't address the point:
If possible, should homosexuality be ""cured""?
What about belief in God?
>>
>>8206794
Essentially, the definition of a mental illness is something which impedes on your livelihood. With the political acceptance of homosexual and transexuality, and all that other nonsense it seems that it cannot be defined as a mental illness.

It's important to note that sociopathy, and narcissism aren't actually considered mental illnesses. Rather, personality disorders. In this case, I'm not too sure what defines a personality disorder.
>>
>>8206794
>>8206803
I can't actually bring up consistent points against what you're saying, psychology has a lot of double standards, fine print, asterisks. It's actually a mess of a field.
>>
>>8206803
>>8206808
Yes, this is my point
What 'impedes your livelihood' is politically informed
>>
>>8206809
Here's actually a very good example from the opposite side

People want gender dysphoria (transgenderism) declassified as a mental illness
People want species dysphoria (otherkin) declassified

Some people don't even want disability to be thought of as a disability
It's the same as fat people not wanting to be called unhealthy
>>
>>8206812
Well unlike with psychological mental illness there's actually evidence with shows that being overweight is actually unhealthy. The thing is with psychological there is no, or very limited, evidence to support a lot of their claims. Neuroscience is still a developing field.
