That's how most people are on youtube, it takes the stars aligning that suddenly boosts someone up.
Have you heard of the computer guy "Jayz2cents" or something like that? I remember watching his youtube videos a few years ago and he had literally 50-300 views per video and a few hundred subs, this was his youtube channel for 2 years, lots of videos, very little views/subs.
I unsubbed from him after cleaning up my youtube account. Now last week I just checked up on him and he has over 500,000 subs and youtube is his fulltime job. Apparently his shit exploded randomly in 2 years ago.
I wonder how it works, I feel like youtube must have some button they press that they decide who gets to be popular. They must have some algorithm they have going that suggests to them who they should bump up and give exposure to.

I feel bad for musicians these days. There are so many fucking people uploading their stuff that it would be impossible to listen to a tenth of it all. I enjoy messing around in Ableton but have completely accepted the fact that no one will ever hear anything I do except myself, I don't even bother saving 99% of it. The amount of competition even the best amateur musicians face is frightening.

As I understand it there is an algorithm to what gets recommended on the home pages and what gets recommended on the "popular things" list. The first is influenced partly by your viewing history (and whatever other data they have on you from other sources), but both are influenced by views and likes; things with more of both get recommended more often. Then you can get sponsored or whatever they call it, like Pewdie is.

It's because what gets popular isn't based on how good it is.
Youtube is really all just a popularity contest.
Collaborating with popular youtubers is one of the only ways to make it it on youtube now...and it takes A LOT of fucking collaborating to do that. Even then, if you dont have charisma/personality or have that special something people want......you'll never get what you want, regardless of how good your music is.

I once ran into some guy's channel who had over 3000 videos and only 40 subscribers. His most watched video only had like 1000 views or something.
Pretty sad desu. He made Lets play's, anime reviews and vlogs, and even though these type of videos are generic as fuck he still seemed like a nice lad, and his voice and commentary wasn't as shitty and insufferable as other faggots who have millions of subscribers.
Succeeding in some things is all about luck I guess.
