Hello, I'm a journalist from the BBC.

We are producing a documentary on the impact of social media on our lives in the 21st century. In addition to the other social networks, we wanted to include opinions and perspectives from the less mainstreams media such as 4chan. If you could take the time to answer these questions we would be grateful:

What first drew you to 4chan?

What makes 4chan different from the other social networks?

Many think the content of this website is controversial. What would you say to that?

Do you think 4chan would benefit from allowing users to have a homepage and profile picture?
>>
The only BBC I know of is Big Black Cock

Edgy humour

What makes 4chan different from the other social networks?
It's not a social network you vapid lefty cunt. It's fucking anonymous. It's an imageboard like the forums of old.

>Many think the content of this website is controversial. What would you say to that?
Ofcourse it is. Most of these posts would be censored on the BBC website and very ofte are.

>Do you think 4chan would benefit from allowing users to have a homepage and profile picture?
Too obvious at this point OP.

A friend told me about it in high school.

>What makes 4chan different from the other social networks?

Anonymity mainly.

>Many think the content of this website is controversial. What would you say to that?

It's pretty closed minded to judge a whole site based on some of the boards.

>Do you think 4chan would benefit from allowing users to have a homepage and profile picture?

No.
>>
>>28377764
Shouldn't you instead be making a documentary of how 4chan has contributed to oppressing the poor women and Muslim people and how everyone here is a racist homophobe? The state run media in Britain sure is in a sorry state if it has to ask questions on 4chan to find news.

What a silly thread, hope you find it entertaining op.

>What first drew you to 4chan?
The fact that it seemed to be the only place on the internet where I could interact with other social rejects like myself. A lot of us fucking hate our lives and want to kill ourselves so it's nice to share our feels.

Also, 4chan spews out some top tier memes and like to be a part of that.

>What makes 4chan different from other social networks?
4chan is not a social network.

>Many think the content of this website is controversial. What would you say to that?
Fuck off normies, REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

>Do you think 4chan would benefit from allowing users to have a homepage and profile picture?
That defeats the point of the website.

This was some nice b8 OP, but I answered it in case it was real.

>>

>What makes 4chan different from the other social networks?
It's anonymous. Does not require registration. Allows one to just post whatever bullshit comes to mind and forget about it, without tying it to an identity. Also the vanity factor of other networks is almost nonexistant. There's no "likes", "thumbs up", "upvotes" or "karma".
>Many think the content of this website is controversial. What would you say to that?
It's an anonymous imageboard, so people aren't held accountable for what they express here. Allows one to actually express oneself without having to conform to social norms imposed by the environment.
The culture (sic) we have here promotes irony, too bad boards like /pol/ are filled with 12 year olds who don't get it and take it seriously
>Do you think 4chan would benefit from allowing users to have a homepage and profile picture?
This is not facebook. I repeat. This is no facebook. The point of anonymous (ANONYMOUS) imageboards is quite the opposite.
>>
In response to the topic of anonymity, do you believe the content of these messaging boards permits anonymity? Should people not be held accountable to what they post on social media?

face to face anonymity yes, but the mods and the people they sell our information to, no.

Held accountable for posting on the web...? There is no such thing as a thought crime.
>>
>>28378029
>Should people not be held accountable to what they post on social media?
Public figures such as politicians should.
And people will always be held accountable for what they publicly express, because they are doing so.
But anonimity permits one to publicly express those ideas without having them tied to your personality, we all need to let this out sometime.
This is an interesting place to see what society hides behind the surface of political correctness
>>
>>28378029
I think 4chan has a different set of rules to most other sites.
Posting on 4chan you are aware of the culture of the board, i wouldn't take personal offence to anything posted here, but equally i wouldn't post the same content on a more open forum like twitter or Facebook.

Anonymity and lack of upvotes and likes (although (You)s are unofficially considered these).

>Many think the content of this website is controversial. What would you say to that?
It's not as controversial as it used to be.

No. That would lessen anonymity.

Britbong here.

>What first drew you to 4chan?
Curiousity.

>What makes 4chan different to other social networks?
The fact that, although it's not a 'social network' per se, it's more 'real' than similar sites (reddit, tumblr etc).

Take a thread on this very board. It's mostly likely about how someone cannot find a companion no matter how hard they try. You feel for them, try to comfort them, share stories of rejection of heartbreak. Now compare it to, say, a blog post from tumblr. It's either people trying to get attention or spout something nonsensical about Left-wing politics. Add in people who claim to identify as various wild animals, and you get the impression that the users of tumblr are either:

>a: insane
>b: lying
>c: both

And of course the usual forced anonymity etc etc

>Many think the content of this website is controversial. What would you say to that?

I think that the anonymity heavily contributes to the controversial reputation 4chan has. You can pretty much post anything you want, and no-one knows your true identity. You can post stuff that would be considered controversial or taboo if it was discussed in conversation with friends or on other social networks. It's almost like a way of escaping reality.

>Do you think 4chan would benefit from allowing users to have a homepage and profile picture.

No. It entirely defeats the point of an anonymous image board, and only encourages attention seekers.

It's anonymity, the freedom of speech weddon't really have here in the UK and the memes

>Many think the content of this website is controversial. What would you say to that?

It is. That's what makes it great though. We talk our minds with no consequence and it's beautiful.

Do you think 4chan would benefit from allowing users to have a homepage and profile picture?

No. It completely defeats what 4chan is. An old school message board from the early 2000s with that early internet kind of feel.

>What makes 4chan different from the other social networks?

It isn't social, so is not one. Only the lonely truly stay here.

>Many think the content of this website is controversial. What would you say to that?

Not really, its what people actually think. A lot of politicians would us to stop our aggressive thoughts, which is unnatural, this place allows it.
>Do you think 4chan would benefit from allowing users to have a homepage and profile picture?

Bad question. Of course not, anonymity is the only real free speech. Consequences stop us doing what we want or think, people who do this irl are arseholes.
>>
I am aware this is stupid but I have nothing better to do.
>What first drew you to 4chan?
Anime discussion and hearing the site mentioned in various places around the internet. I wanted to be part of some kind of community and part of the collective force behind the internet which is what I had heard 4chan was at the time.
>What makes 4chan different from the other social networks?
For me being able to post and remain completely anonymous helps a lot. I am able to say whatever I want and not worry about a grudge being held against me on the website and I am able to post without the possibility of the few people I know in real life seeing if they happened to come here.
>Many think the content of this website is controversial. What would you say to that?
It's simply a product of people being willing to express themselves freely.
>Do you think 4chan would benefit from allowing users to have a homepage and profile picture?
No. It would defeat part of what makes this website so easy to use for so me and many others.

Thanks for giving me something to type about.

I switched from reddit to 4chan because of the oregon shooting. I've always thought that 4chan could be more like facebook, and I really wish it would. I think the best thing about this site is just how le edgey it is. If I could just have an account with linked points based on how well my threads did, that would be fantastic. I'd also like to be able to create my own personal boards that only my friends can have access to. If I did have a 4chan homepage, it would be purely dedicated to all of the 2dqts (This means pretty pictures of girls) I've collected since i first arrived here (pic related).

As you can see, since coming here i've adapted pretty well to the common parlance over here.

Hope this is good enough for you OP (In case you don't know, that means Original Post) Keep on being awesome BBC!

What drew me to 4chan was not only the site itself, but largely the userbase. You're allowed to say anything and everything you want, and unless people manage to invalidate you it's completely okay, unlike the real world we see today where even the mention of a dissenting opinion can earn you actual jail time.

4chan is anonymous. This means more for your psyche, your ideologies and your principals more than any other site could possibly hope to emulate - its format derived from 2channel puts what you think on the world stage, and not who you are. What matters is what you say, meaning nobody can attack you unless you try to push an obvious agenda that could clue them into who you are, like the mainstream media and now even mainstream social networks try to do.

The content on this website is not of this website, it is born of the minds that make it and belongs to those alone. 4chan is not a hive-mind, contrary to popular belief - ideas constantly pit themselves against each other, with the most suitable, practical and in our case entertaining ones taking their place in board culture.

4chan already has a homepage. If you mean a personalised one, then no. Profile pictures are also banned under the global rule set, but if users wish to identify themselves they can always use a tripcode like I'm doing now. It's less intrusive, and uses less space than an image. If people wanted either of the things you're suggesting, they can just go to Reddit - it accommodates all of your suggestions and more. There's a reason why we choose not to however, as outlined in my writing above.

Bear in mind that you're not representing a website, or some dumb group of kids in your awful documentary. Unlike the BBC which yearns to be a homogeneous wasteland of any kinds of diversity, be they philosophical or physical (to the point of even denying white applicants consideration for programming director positions, which is illegal) - 4chan is not a melting pot. It is a salad bowl.

Do british people just not laugh? I assume that british people have a different sense of humor, but are they that posh that they stifle laughter when a comedian's on stage?

What first drew you to 4chan?

online humour

What makes 4chan different from the other social networks?

twitter and facebook are not the same, neither is 4chan.

4chan is more of a forum.

Many think the content of this website is controversial. What would you say to that?

There are cases when that is genuine in some circumstances such as child porn.

However alot of trolling and other activities are miscronstrued.

Do you think 4chan would benefit from allowing users to have a homepage and profile picture?

No, that would be incompatable with how the site is styled.

what would be useful would be a imgur style image and video library.

the closure of bbc three was a mistake, it costs the bbc nothing to use the channels airspace to broadcast.

the programs remain the same so whats the point of removing the option to watch bbc three offline?

now there is just a hole in freeview, its not like the bbc made any money from selling the airspace to commercial company so why do it?

Whats the point in broadcasting premier league results in somali if the bbc cannot provide entertainment to the uk?

You want to know how to be better?

1. dad's army and only fools and horses etc repeats should not be on television in 2016.

2. does every drama have to be about world war two or the victorians?

3. Not all comedy has to be political (e.g. have i got news for you,the news quiz).

4.Rich people doing stuff like buying houses and antiques is dull as ditchwater and inconsiderate to 99 percent of the country who will never live like that.

5. the propaganda is blatant. when the mighty boosh and family guy started being replaced with programs such as "the truth about skunk" and "is britain racist?" people will naturally tune out.

6. which isn't to say political broadcasting on bbc 3 was a failure, the revolution will not be televised and stacey dooley investigates were great.
