People act differently if they have a duty imposed on them, especially if it has sentiment attached to it. Those stories of guys who really step up and become the role of a father when they're kid is born, they're fulfilling a very intimate duty, one with very close feelings of attachment.
Compare that to the duty imposed on a low-wage worker. They fulfill their duty, maybe help a customer. But there's no real feeling of closeness, no intimacy or sentimentality to their duty.
I think that given that level of attachment to a person, most people here would try their hardest to fulfill their duty well. But it's something that's truly on an individual basis. You won't really know until that context makes you do it.

I've heard that sometimes, therapists/psychologists recommend that depressed people get a pet so they HAVE to do some things with their day, and hopefully will bond with the animal and cheer up.
But it is more for having to get up to take your dog for walks, or let your bird out of its cage while you clean its bedding, or whatever. So that you have to become a man of PURPOSE and DETERMINATION lest your pet die in a pile of its own shit. And even if you're the most callous person on earth, having a dead dog in your house is kinda gross and you'll want to avoid that.
