Originally there was only a few people who liked rap, and they were affiliated with the "ghetto"/"gansta" culture.
"ghetto" culture became "cool" and people started listening to rap because that made them seem "cool".
Eventually because more people listened to rap it became "cooler" and more commonplace and therefore even MORE people started listening, even though a lot of people don't actually like the music itself.
This continued until EVERYONE "likes" rap.
Basically, rap is a forced meme.
