Hey, /r9k/, some of you might remember me, but I am a guy who archives/catalogs information and images about Silent Hill, specifically SH2. I am bored and pulling an all-nighter, so I was wondering if anyone wants to talk about Silent Hill, ask lore questions, hear my theories, learn some trivia/fun facts, whatever.

I will probably be here for at least a couple hours, I've got some coffee and I'm ready to go.

I also have some download links for the PC versions of the games along with widescreen/other fixes if you guys are interested.

I first came across the game back around 2004 I believe, and I was only 7 years old, but it intrigued me. I read and read, and asked my dad to get it for me for my birthday. He did, and I played the hell out of it on my PS2. I still would read about it all the time after I finished it. I then followed all the Silent Hill games, playing them all as I grew up (unfortunately they got worse as I got older). But about 2.5 years ago I got big into theory discussion and lore interpretations, and just about a month ago I decided to start this archive with the goal of being more extensive than the wiki, along with having custom higher res images than even the wiki has.

There is an HD Collection on Steam, but DO NOT BUY IT. The HD Collection butchers the games, changes the voices, sound effects, graphical glitches, less fog, it's terrible. Here are the download links:
SH1 NTSC DDL:
https://mega.nz/#!bVUCTJzD!PmnPw4S7fWGyvTjw9S0-RQdk7rRp2BQNuXJqRkZCZvk

SH2 DDL:
https://mega.nz/#!rFcj1SIJ!47JH9M4OrzmQKuaiJ6IqUgmgz_SVNtk4LIYNSa-D-_8

SH3 DDL:
https://mega.nz/#!2JNkgJ7b!nfPf5cIs6I5K-sdAs7RcnHvGA2hAvIGdpQuIoBhF3iE

SH4 DDL:
https://mega.nz/#!Us1XTaII!cglH0dZOaH5yQEm4cnEh3eyUz4bIf6rACQqcVzkb4Hc

And in case someone's once again new to this PC gaming stuff: Use a program like DaemonTools Lite to mount the ISOs of 2 & 3, and then run their installers like always.
The SH1 is a PS1 rip that you gotta emulate.
The "sh2proxy" fix works as a no-cd crack as well, and is included in the pack.

In case you experience issues saving the game / not being able to edit the disp.ini, make sure the files aren't set to "Read Only", and run the game as Administrator.
If SH2 gets stuck in a black screen upon launch, close it and re-start it again.

here's the recommended emulator settings for SH1. Works great on all other games too.

The plugins used are:
-Pete's OpenGL 1.78; (more options & better performance than 2.x version)
-Eternal's SPU Engine.

SPOILER WARNING:
So Mary's illness left her bedridden in St. Jerome Hospital, and James would have to go and visit her. Every time he did, he would see these sexy, attractive, young, uncaring nurses. You know, just uncaring, in and out of the room, faceless and nameless nurses. During Mary's illness, James had no sexual relief. He had feelings of extreme guilt for noticing the attractive nurses, and that is what the nurse enemies represent- that's why they are dressed up all sexy with short skirts and cleavage. Also, after the hospital section, you go outside to a completely pitch black/dark Silent Hill, and what do you find that wasn't there before? Sexy nurses wandering the streets, at night. Night walkers, you could say- hinting further at their sexual origin, and perhaps at the fact that James may have cheated on Mary with prostitutes. There is no confirmation of this, just very subtle hints. Whether it's true or not, likely depends on your James and what ending you get.

Honestly, recently I've been playing Dark Souls 3 and thinking a lot about how well some of its design elements would play out in a Silent Hill game. I just mean the melee combat, movement, and so on would make it so the actual gameplay of the games is decent. I don't know, that's just more of a fleeting thought than anything though. I would love to see a Silent Hill game with an actual veteran of war (not like Homecoming, an actual veteran with PTSD). Something like that would lend itself well to the psychological trauma inherent to the games' protagonists. I would love to say battered housewife but that's too derivative of Angela.

I think 4 is good, Origins is decent, and Shattered Memories is at the very least a great reimagining of the first game.

I disagree considering SM and Origins were both Western. Origins has very little meat to it, but it's still a decent game. Downpour has some wonderful, wonderful ideas, but it botches it for the most part. I do like Murphy though, and the Surprise Ending is awesome.

I haven't played Origins in a few years, but I think you might be thinking of Homecoming because THAT game rapes the cult element of Silent Hill into dust. Origins was a very self contained story for the most part, Alessa appears but it's only at the beginning, and then to explain the Otherworld.

The Order is actually a mistranslation from 3- it was meant to just be an order, not an official The Order type cult. There is a cult religion, but it wasn't meant to be so identifiable and full of human workers like in Homecoming. The entire Order in that game is derivative of a mistranslation, plus the cult ought to be dead after SH3.

They're actually not very scary. The number of jump scares in 2 and 3 combined is 2. No joke. They just have an incredibly unnerving atmosphere, and they will disturb you. They're from a time when horror was about subtly. Although 3 is scarier than 2. Some of the enemy noises are beyond terrifying though. Hell the ambient noise is terrifying, case in point:

SPOILERS:
He came to Silent Hill after a life time of getting bullied for being fat and ugly. He was mainly bullied by football players. Before coming to Silent Hill, he had enough, so he took his dad's revolver and shot a football player's dog, along with the football player in the knee. He has never actually killed any humans though, confirmed by Ito. He is extremely paranoid and (quite comically) claims the dog was "walking all over him". He has terrible self esteem, and he was inspired by the Columbine shooters. He is named after Eddie Murhpy, as he was originally very cheerful, and his last name comes from Louise Dombrowski, a Twin Peaks character.

>Homecoming was suppose to a trilogy
>Old characters like Heather, Henry, and Laura(who was Elle) were suppose to return
>Pyramid Head was suppose to have a much larger role
>The finale would have Josh and Alessa having a "Super Saiyan" battle over Toluca lake with Josh controlling water and Alessa controlling Fire

>Origins was suppose to be a dark comedy inspired by the TV show "Scrubs"

>Downpour in early development was suppose to have Murphy be an definite criminal and it had an American Psycho quality to it, described as "What if Patrick Bateman was loose in Silent Hill?"

It's very specific but somewhere in SH2 you come across a baby carriage accompanied by a mannequin (I think it's near the empty pool at the appartments). The mannequin appears to have died while walking around with the baby carriage.

What do you think about the whole "everyone is/turned into a monster" theory?
I know it's the other games but Vincent from SH3 even jokingly asks Heather if "she sees them as monsters" while we know that every monster from SH1&3 if a figment of her (Heather/Cheryl/Alessa) imagination and drawings, but what the monsters from SH3 represent is more unclear than the more self-explanatory more animalistic monsters from SH1.

>>28017908
That's actually not true, you find the baby carriage inside the empty pool surrounded by three lying figures.

I really like that theory, very much so. Vincent says, "they look like monsters to you?" He goes onto say he's joking, but he seems pretty serious. The monsters in SH3 actually are pretty clear as to what they represent- Heather/Alessa's internalized fear. There's a lot of childbirth/sexual anxiety due to Alessa's early experiences and Heather's divine pregnancy, and so on. There's also a general theme of duality in the monsters, from Closers to the Pendulums.

I like the theory that everyone has turned into a monster, but there's so little evidence behind it that I can't say if it's true. It's up to your own head canon honestly- I don't think of it that way, but you sure could and it would still make some sense.
>>
>>28016923
Do you like 1 and 3 better than 2? I prefer 2 because I found the cult stuff in 1 and 3 a boring cliche. I thought 2 was more interesting because the town itself drew from their minds. I may also be the only person that enjoyed Downpour.

You're right, I hadn't heard that, that's pretty interesting. I would kind of like that, honestly, a very guilty person who's less sympathetic than James entering Silent Hill- maybe a child molester or wifebeater. Maybe the monster designs could reflect their abusive past, or them being molested which led to a later cycle of them molesting others- just really, really terrible and dark stuff. I think that would be neat.

I like to keep it local on my hard drive. I also take some pleasure in the fact that I have more than the wiki, even going in the game and taking my own high res photos of things even the wiki doesn't have. I might add to it once I finish my archive, though. An anon last night suggested I make my own site dedicated to Silent Hill 2 with all of my lore interpretations and theories.

I just finished my character documents, they're all huge. I'm going to explain why I really like the environment design of SH2 really quickly, and what I believe them to mean lorewise:
The standard issue Silent Hill environment in SH2 is washed out- it's how the apartments look, it's how the Lakeview Hotel looks, it's how the prison looks, it's how the hospital looks before the Otherworld. Everything looks like it has been flooded in the past, everything is water damaged. My interpretation of this is that it represents two things- one, James' intention of killing himself in Silent Hill, which is confirmed in the novelization which uses the In Water ending. His suicidal ideation is apparent numerous times, when he looks at Angela's knife, reading the journal on top of the hospital, it represents his future intentions of driving his car into Toluca Lake and drowning himself. But it also represents too much water- flooding means too much water, and what does too much water mean? Drowning. Drowning=suffocation. It's James' psyche projecting his repressed knowledge of suffocating Mary onto the environment.

The other interesting thing, pic related, is the Otherworld design- notice that everything is tightly wrapped in cloth- in my opinion this has two meanings. One, something in James' psyche is hidden, "under-wraps"- the fact he killed Mary. Two, look how tightly everything is constricted by cloth- it reflects the tight restriction of the pillow on Mary's face, suffocating her. It's too tight to breathe.

>comfiness
Weirdly enough I agree these games being comfy, I think that might actually be why the game is so terrifying. Because it knows exactly where the uncanny valley is, where things border between familiar and weird. The games even have several truly comfy moments where you're considerably safe, usually after exiting the nightmare world. This contrast makes the games work so well.

Bloodborne had that same feel of comfiness, but wasn't as "creepy" as towering eldritch horrors generally exceed the more realistic fear of a human-sized monstrosity. Those screaming cunts in chalice dungeons are far more terrifying to me than, say, Amygdala.

I started playing SH when the SH1 demo disc came with the copy of MGS1 I got for my 11th birthday. The demo featured the uncensored "grey child" content and I remember the genuine confusion and panic I felt as I got stabbed to death by knife-wielding ayy lmaos.

>>28017963
I just remembered that when returning to the first monster you encounter the scene seems to be taped off as if it were a crime scene. This obviously doesn't necessarily mean that you simply see everyone as a monster, but it does imply that there are people going on with their daily normal lives in Silent Hill.

Kek, knife wielding ayy lmaos. I'm glad someone else knows that feeling of comfy from SH.
Also you're right, the scene is taped off. There are some strange implications throughout all of the town honestly, but yes there is some version of Silent Hill which is real and functional- it's where Mary and James visited the first time, of course.

That would be true except for
1. Silent Hill is still a functional town. Mary and James visited it not long before his second visit, and it was a normal place. There is a version of the town that is normal, and one that is made by the character's psyche.
2. If they just wanted to cover up things to prevent dust, why cover the ceiling and walls, too? Also, a lot of the coverings look very much like flesh.

You do, but there's other factors as well. As long as she isn't constantly getting hit you should be fine for the good ending. I wish I could help you more, but really you just have to trudge though and beat back anyone who gets too close to her. The ghosts are by far the hardest enemy in the game.
>>
>>28018595
That's the point - it's a psyche thing. Covered up furniture etc point at a deeper abandonment.

They indicate people left you rather than just drifted away. As such, the fact we can see them everywhere, points at the character feeling abandoned. It's a pretty standard trope and usually used in movies.

I recall reading some theories that it's because he is the red God some memo in the game makes a reference about.
But considering Pyramid Head is supposed to be James's wish for punishment, that wouldn't really make much sense. But in Pyramid head's lair, there is an implication that he is the one that is putting all the bodies inside frames, so maybe he is the otherworld's manager or something lol.

Question, did Dahlia mean to burn Alessa or not?

There is a theory that the impregnation ritual does involve immolation, but that the fire got out of hand. And then there is also a theory that the ritual involved no fire, and that Alessa started it by blowing up a boiler with her powers. I don't know which is true.

Personally I'm leaning towards the whole Dahlia burned Alessa side of things. Alessa was shown to be fairly submissive towards her mother, I don't think she'd be directly aggressive towards her, and Dahlia is hubris enough to think that she alone can summon god from her house and claim familial ties to it, her thinking that she can keep the fire in check doesn't seem that unlikely.
>>
>>28016779
what's the scariest and/or most disturbing thing in SH2?
>>
>>28020041
I'm not an expert on Silent Hill 1, but from what I know Dahlia did it on purpose. She was extremely abusive, hit her (according to her teacher K Gordon), locked her in dark attics for weeks, and was basically incredibly torturous to her for her whole childhood with the intention of provoking out some of her power. So I do believe she burned her intentionally, and it got out of hand what with the entire home burning down. This is implied pretty strongly in Origins as well.
>>
>>28020079
Most disturbing? Angela's background. Raped and beaten by her father as well as brother, told she deserved it by her mother. She looks like a 30 year old woman, but is only 19. This is intentional, meant to show that she's been aged beyond her years.

Scariest? Personally I think the scariest part are the random whispers you hear in the prison and the apartment:

The arguments against that are in a newspaper article which can be found in some version of SH1, claiming that a boiler started a fire. Also, the fact that Heather suffered no immolation.

Still, Heather underwent no ritual at all, leading me to believe that whatever was done to "impregnate" Alessa simply stuck on to her reincarnation. And the article also claims that Alessa died. The cult had its fingers in too many pies to take anything the officials say at face value.

But yeah, SH2 is the best as far as story and characters go.

I remember that, it's coming back to me now. I haven't played SH1 in a few months. SH3 is fresh in my mind though, and you're right, it's an immaculate conception with Heather. I was always under the impression that it was a "left over" of sorts from her Alessa half.

I agree man. Also, that's such a wonderful image- I will never forget that sight because it's so spooky.

Thanks for bringing up this question by the way, I'm going to freshen up on my SH1 lore/notes and try to figure this thing out. Interesting stuff.

>>
>>28020454
Cool, cool, thank you for this. I have the Book of Lost Memories but I didn't think to check it. I figured it involved fire somehow.

>How do you interpret Maria existing and doing her own thing before she meets James?

Ah, this question I can answer. In Born From A Wish, Maria starts out very child like. She is saying very simple minded things, like "I'm scared to die" and "I don't like being alone", "Is there anyone besides me?". She sounds like she just was born, as hinted at by the title of her scenario Born From A Wish. In SH3, we see posters that have a stripper at Heaven's Night named Maria, see the picture in >>28018037
In my opinion, it's very likely she was morphed from a stripper or person of some sort into Maria, modified to fit James better. You can tell she was created specifically for James by the voice, face, and so on, but also notice that her rag in the sink has Mary's dress pattern, pic related.

In my opinion, she was a stripper who was modified/morphed/born into Maria. There's no definitive proof, but I think it's implied on some level.

My theory is that what's going on at Silent Hill was actually supposed to be Heaven, a spiritual realm where a person's innermost wants and desires could be conjured up conciously to create an ideal utopia. The solution to the puzzle has green eyes looking at James- green is a recurring color for James. His jacket, his eyes, the long forest sequence at the beginning of the game, his grave being in a green room, and so on. Green represents vitality, determination, and eternity in Japan- representing his relentless search for Mary, the determination he has to find her, and the fact that he wants to die to be with her for eternity.

I recommend you play the games, I posted download links up above, and then read the wiki to start getting into it. Read the thread, but beware of spoilers.

It's a shame.

Because the devs think it's funny.

That's really it, they just like aliens and the UFO Endings became a loved and cherished tradition.

Team Silent have an immature sense of humor.

>They just have an incredibly unnerving atmosphere, and they will disturb you.

This is why many people might find them too scary to play though. They do this very well. You can't really find much games, hell even movies that are as nightmarish with the atmosphere like Silent Hill is. Not even trying to be a fanboy here. They are just very unique.

No you're absolutely right. Playing it just makes you feel disgusted, and disturbed, shaken in a way no other horror game really can shake you. It's why I love em.

This game means a lot to me for the simple fact that my mother really enjoyed this game
I was born in 95 and I remember sitting in her bedroom watching her play it back in 2001
Being young made this game really spooky and mysterious
My mom died from cancer in 04 and I remember these nights of just me and her
Shit's comfy
Sometimes I listen to the OST and think of her and what could've been a more fairly normal childhood

Sorry for the blog post
Just posting some /feels/

That's really sweet anon. I'm sorry to hear she passed, though. I hope you are feeling happier now a days.

I've never played the game as I've never had a playstation but I find long plays of them comfy, my girlfriend used to hold a European record for speed runs of the first two games.

>>28023963
Sounds good to me man. I find them comfy as well.

Apparently, James' voice actor hasn't played the game at all before this.

Why did you say you dislike pyramid head OP?

Alone in the town is my official theme song. I'd probably be dead if not for it.

I don't recall ever saying that, I dislike that they use him for brand recognition in Homecoming and the movies, but I love him in 2.
>>28024576
Great choice.

Saw that when they did the hitbox stream. He said he never even seen most of the game before that point. Nor has the guy that played Eddie.

Seems very strange to me how so many of these actors don't like to ever see the work they do. You would think he would be curious to see how his work in the game looked but I guess he just don't care for that silly ass vidya stuff.

He's actually really well acquainted with a lot of fans and he loves the game now- he just wasn't interested for a long time because Konami kind of fucked him over pay wise. They even censored his face out of the Making Of video.

Konami actually refused to pay any of the original voice actors royalties for the HD Collection, but Guy Cihi gathered all the voice actors and said- look, they're not gonna pay us, but our original voicing has a lot of soul and character and it means a lot to the fans, so let's just let them do it for free. They all agreed. Unfortunately they couldn't do the same for 3, because Douglas's voice actor has passed away.

I love Konami games (not like they make games anymore), but fuck they've always been a shady company with unethical practices.

>>28024914
Yeah, they're assholes. They are just lucky to have gotten so many good dev teams.

>I dislike that they use him for brand recognition in Homecoming and the movies
Because he was specific to 2 and they took him out of context? I don't rly know anything about silent hill.
>>
>>28025049
Yes. He is designed to represent and be a duality of the main character of SH2. He's literally designed with that character in mind- everything about his appearance and behavior is tailored to that character, so it doesn't make sense for him to be in Homecoming or the movies. They just abuse him for brand recognition.

I liked Shattered Memories

Not everyone is interested in videogames.

Majority of League of Legends/Dota2 voice actors don't even play games.
