I'll preface my post by saying that while I know it's dumb or even taboo to take ourselves seriously, /r9k/ is allegorical to a larger picture.
For me, and I believe for a majority of other people, /r9k/ is just an expression of how those who are outside the mainstream (the loners, or 'betas') cope with the negative emotions stemming from not being a part of that mainstream. Those negative emotions can be reflected towards oneself (being an hero) or towards others (being a supreme gentleman). At the end of the day, normies will never understand what it's like to be outside the mainstream because they've always been in that insulated and comfy bubble. I know it's dumb, but I genuinely believe /r9k/ is the best way to describe a segment of the current generation that's been alienated to extremes.
The reason you can't leave /r9k/ is because no one understands you outside of your own house - even what friends you may or may not have - and you want, at the very least, to be understood and have some veneer of companionship in our shared misery.
