What's your experience with MMORPGs?

The genre has kinda died down over the years, new "big" ones come out and die in months.
The only that stay around are WoW and Final Fantasy XIV.
XIV is what I'm playing and it's really good surprise after trying some of the bad ones. There's a free trial on Steam.
I havent followed WoW in a long time, latest expansions always seem to be shitty unless you have social reasons to play it, there's private servers mostly with nostalgic players and mostly everyone will expect you to already know everything.

I have had a good eye for finding cool guilds with chill people who just want to socialize and have fun. But I've always been so awkward and silent that I couldn't keep it up. As a result I was a solo player for most of the game.
One time a guild member got mad at me for trying to pay for an enchantment they gave me.
One time I made the huge mistake of applying to a guild as a tank when I couldn't into voice chat. I was expected to pull encounters with mobs but I was out of touch with the raid leader and wasn't sure exactly when I was supposed to do it. I autistically waited for him to say "okay, go" every single time.

WoW. I've been playing since it came out though usually with the same two classes so I have a lot of hours under my belt. I usually just play casual and it doesn't really matter if you are good or not. I also love starting new toons if you want someone to level with.
I played wow for 10 years. Ended up raiding 3 nights a week mostly with a guild that had good banter and some good players. Guild disbanded and I ended up quitting for that and some other reasons. Will probably start up again.

Don't join teenage lootwhore guilds. All of the raid leaders in my guild were 25ish year old women. It worked out great because once females reach a critical mass they stop thinking that they are special or need special treatment for being female. The majority of people overall being adults helps massively as well.

i only played runescape back in 2004-2007
i remember pretending to be a girl on there when i was like 8 and this guy asked me out, so i pretended to be a girl for 2 years straight because he was my only friend, i'd stay up all night on there roleplaying as his wife in this house we pretended to live, it was a very comfy house with a nice yard and interior, and i still go back there sometimes 12 years later and just stare into the abyss wondering where my life went, we both lied about our age and said we were 20 and adopted other players as our children and we roleplayed as a family in the house, i started grinding the game without sleep so much that my grades were failing just so i could give my husband as much gifts as possible, then one day he just suddenly disappeared, 5 years later he came back and i found out it was a 38 year old obese woman

mostly the best bunch who do mind how they spend their time, absolutely epic banter on voiceover during raids and events
they are usually friendly
the downside is theres always some muppets who are from casuals and some hardcore wannabes

I enjoy MMORPGs where a good amount can be reasonably soloed. Fuck ones that force you to play with other people. I learned quickly not to attempt to socialize in MMOs because from my experience, unless you're a godlike expert of the game who's payed a ton of money into it (which is never me), people are just going to either ignore me or act like total dicks.

I'm enjoying FFXIV in that it can be played mostly single player and when the main scenairo quest makes you do dungeon with 3 other players they have an incentive to player with you. People get rewarded for playing with new people.

The entire game was basically everyone being jolly as fuck. No one cared about content, content was hard as fuck anyways. Everyone I met was super generous, willing to chat and always had a good demeanor.
They added in a buff so you could solo story quests that usually you would need a group for, because it was impossible to get everyone on the same part of the questlines. That entire game was meant to be played as a giant party wandering mid-earth and it would have been great if anyone actually played it.
Then I got to fucking Rohan and played skifree on horses.
I never thought that 'mounted combat' would be something that I actually dreaded.

If you're into vanilla/TBC then find a private server. There's a few good ones out there (not great, the scene is still recovering after nostalrius shutdown).
I've found majority of the players are 18-21 and never played vanilla/TBC during retail which was kind of odd. I can't speak for everyone, but most people I know are lenient to new vanilla/TBC players (or those who have forgotten because it's been 10+ years).

This is why I join male only guilds in any MMO I play. Not only are there no histrionic whores for people in the guild to grovel around, but the guys who have joined have joined for the same reason you have usually, and wouldn't be the type to do something like that anyway.
