Good music always goes under the radar during its time. You've got a very mistaken perspective of what music was like through the ages.
Just take the Summer of Love for example. It was a huge change in the music scene. Bands everywhere were experimenting and inventing and revolutionizing music. Only a relatively small but devoted audience was following it though. The leading single that year was fucking "Sugar, Sugar" by the Archies. A cringey smorgasbord of kitchy, corny trash that was written by a group of middle-aged record producers trying to make an easy buck. The Archies aren't even a real band, they're fictional characters from a TV show.
Music has to be simplified to its breaking point in order for it to appease a large audience. I guarantee you, there are lots of people who think all the music you listen to is shitty. You need to develop an ear for complicated music in order to appreciate it. I never really understood avant-garde music when I was growing up. Now I'll listen to those songs that I thought were too "weird" five years ago and they'll sound completely different this time around. I hear a nice tune where before there was only noise.
You sound like you're on the cusp of young adulthood, OP. Part of becoming an adult is not caring about being cool in the eyes of everyone else. When you're a teen, you want to be better than everybody, so you listen to the edgiest music, read the edgiest literature, take up the edgiest religion, etc. I did all that too. But now I don't really care what other people think of me. I listen to the lamest music I know without feeling much shame, because... well, fuck you, I like it for some reason.
Maybe one day you'll see what I mean. Unless you die young in some freak roller-coaster accident, I guess.
