Valve games have much better communities on console in my experience. Everyone just seems a lot more friendly, I've met a lot of fun people on 360 TF2/L4D/CSGO. Even though vanilla go is boring as hell I still play it sometimes just to talk to people.

This is my main complaint with the game. I've been playing CS for almost 15 years. In the 1.6 and CSS days when you wanted to play 5 on 5 you had to buy a server, you had to have a Teamspeak/Vent channel and you had to get on IRC to find people to play against.
Valve definitely streamlined that process with MM and over all I think they did a good job. But the matchmaking is full of so many people who scream on their mic and are just hostile. It's not Valve's fault, that's just what comes with playing with random people.
I stopped playing league games a couple years ago and CAL is gone now. I'd guess CEVO is the closest thing to what we had going back then.

I don't play 1.6 or Source anymore and I only play GO casually. I mainly play other games now, I just keep GO installed because sometimes I get the CS itch.
If you were CAL-I, yeah, you'd probably wreck me. I would scrim with invite guys and they were better than me. They also played a lot more than me. We still had fun.

I only played CAL in Source, in 1.6 I just scrimmed and pubbed. I played O in Source for a couple seasons, forget how many exactly. The team was local guys that I knew in person. We did pretty well but were always just short of moving into M. A couple of the guys on my team though did eventually leave and move into CAL M and invite teams.
In GO I'm an MG2 right now which seems ok. I was DMG before they changed the ranks. I have a few friend who have GE accounts and they said playing the MG ranks is better (as in more fun.) Apparently the GE games have a lot of boosted people and hackers and that makes the games less fun. No idea how true that is, doubt I'll ever get to those ranks. I only play a few games every other weekend.
