I think it's time that we begin to have generals on /r9k/ that are either intellectual or educational. We have thousands of lurkers on this board daily that are educated and/or professional at one thing or another.

I believe it to be imperative to our community that we not only sling dank memes at one another but also grow as individuals in one way or another. The amount of expertise/knowledge that can be shared between individuals is amazing, and is also often neglected in favor of spouting shitty memes. 90% of people that browse 4chan either rarely post or never have. These people may come to our board in the search of dank memes, but they also come here for interesting discussion and a sense of community.

With my intentions made clear I would like to begin the discussion with a few questions about a hobby I would like to get into; chess!

My grandfather is big into chess and was the one who taught me how to play as a young child. Around the age of 12 I stopped playing, and haven't really got back into it since.

I'm looking to get into chess and at some point would like to be at least competent enough to play at a tournament level. How should I as a novice chess player get into the game, and what are the best resources for a up and coming chess player?

Also, general chess discussion and other intellectual discussion is more thank welcome!

I realize that how I typed this post out makes me sound like the supreme gentlemen, please don't take me too seriously and try to stimulate some /intellectual/ discussion. I apologize if there is any grammatical and/or formatting problems as I am making this post on my IPhone.

imo there's a nimzovitch book that's good for beginners

also you should start playing online or with other people if there's a chess club nearby

in fatc if there's an active chess club you should defenitily go there

i miss that a lot
>>

What's the chess community like where you live? Is it a bunch of edge lords or are there people who are actually fascinated by the game? I'm kind of afraid that the community where I live is going to be dominated by 13-16 y/o's forced to play by their parents.

when i was a kid i played at a chess club, there were other kids like me and we had a tutor

though the club wasn't for kids, it was mostly 60 and above yo, so we played chess with them for fun and at tournies, it was awesome, though i was a shitty kid

anyway, i'd say you should drop the nickname as a start, and after that look into what there is around you

there will be kids and there will be grown ups i presume

chess isn't about age

Chess isn't fun for me anymore, as I've gotten further into it (only rated 1200 or so online, but I have probably over 1500 games) it's become increasingly clear to me that memorization, especially for openings, is essential or you get absolutely wrecked. Also, if you make one mistake at any point in the game then you lose if you're playing anyone remotely decent. Seems like a game built for autists, not that there's anything wrong with that, but having to actually study (as though you were studying for a tough exam) to get good just isn't appealing to me.

It's really not as bad as the dude makes it sound. Generally you can do fine even without much theory knowledge as long as you understand basics and don't play like an absolute retard in the beginning. You will quickly learn what types of positions you're comfortable in and which ones you need to improve upon.

Behold the alcoholic animals, bemused with drink, the right to an immoderate use of which comes along with freedom. It is not for us and ours to walk that road. The peoples of the GOYIM are bemused with alcoholic liquors; their youth has grown stupid on classicism and from early immorality, into which it has been inducted by our special agents - by tutors, lackeys, governesses in the houses of the wealthy, by clerks and others, by our women in the places of dissipation frequented by the GOYIM. In the number of these last I count also the so-called "society ladies," voluntary followers of the others in corruption and luxury.

This is a thread for independent study recommendations. I realize that you enjoy shitting in everything you feel incapable of enjoying, but it makes you look more pathetic and boring than anything else.

Ask me for book recommendations for philosophy, drawing, painting, anthropology, and theology. I have many interests.

Could somebody recommend a good resource for welding information? I would like to pick up TIG welding, and have access to supervised equipment use, but outside study time would be preferred.

3. It must be noted that men with bad instincts are more in number than the good, and therefore the best results in governing them are attained by violence and terrorisation, and not by academic discussions. Every man aims at power, everyone would like to become a dictator if only he could, and rare indeed are the men who would not be willing to sacrifice the welfare of all for the sake of securing their own welfare.

In order to distract people who may be too troublesome from discussions of questions of the political we are now putting forward what we allege to be new questions of the political, namely, questions of industry. In this sphere let them discuss themselves silly! The masses are agreed to remain inactive, to take a rest from what they suppose to be political (which we trained them to in order to use them as a means of combating the GOY governments) only on condition of being found new employments, in which we are prescribing them something that looks like the same political object. In order that the masses themselves may not guess what they are about WE FURTHER DISTRACT THEM WITH AMUSEMENTS, GAMES, PASTIMES, PASSIONS, PEOPLE'S PALACES .... SOON WE SHALL BEGIN THROUGH THE PRESS TO PROPOSE COMPETITIONS IN ART, IN SPORT IN ALL KINDS: these interests will finally distract their minds from questions in which we should find ourselves compelled to oppose them. Growing more and more unaccustomed to reflect and form any opinions of their own, people will begin to talk in the same tone as we because we alone shall be offering them new directions for thought ... of course through such persons as will not be suspected of solidarity with us.

Far back in ancient times we were the first to cry among the masses of the people the words "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity," words many times repeated since these days by stupid poll-parrots who, from all sides around, flew down upon these baits and with them carried away the well-being of the world, true freedom of the individual, formerly so well guarded against the pressure of the mob. The would-be wise men of the GOYIM, the intellectuals, could not make anything out of the uttered words in their abstractedness; did not see that in nature there is no equality, cannot be freedom: that Nature herself has established inequality of minds, of characters, and capacities, just as immutably as she has established subordination to her laws: never stopped to think that the mob is a blind thing, that upstarts elected from among it to bear rule are, in regard to the political, the same blind men as the mob itself, that the adept, though he be a fool, can yet rule, whereas the non-adept, even if he were a genius, understands nothing in the political - to all those things the GOYIM paid no regard; yet all the time it was based upon these things that dynastic rule rested: the father passed on to the son a knowledge of the course of political affairs in such wise that none should know it but members of the dynasty and none could betray it to the governed. As time went on, the meaning of the dynastic transference of the true position of affairs in the political was lost, and this aided the success of our cause.

For us there are not checks to limit the range of our activity. Our Super-Government subsists in extra-legal conditions which are described in the accepted terminology by the energetic and forcible word - Dictatorship. I am in a position to tell you with a clear conscience that at the proper time we, the law-givers, shall execute judgment and sentence, we shall slay and we shall spare, we, as head of all our troops, are mounted on the steed of the leader. We rule by force of will, because in our hands are the fragments of a once powerful party, now vanquished by us. AND THE WEAPONS IN OUR HANDS ARE LIMITLESS AMBITIONS, BURNING GREEDINESS, MERCILESS VENGEANCE, HATREDS AND MALICE.

TO SECURE THIS WE MUST HAVE EVERYBODY VOTE WITHOUT DISTINCTION OF CLASSES AND QUALIFICATIONS, in order to establish an absolute majority, which cannot be got from the educated propertied classes. In this way, by inculcating in all a sense of self-importance, we shall destroy among the GOYIM the importance of the family and its educational value and remove the possibility of individual minds splitting off, for the mob, handled by us, will not let them come to the front nor even give them a hearing; it is accustomed to listen to us only who pay it for obedience and attention. In this way we shall create a blind, mighty force which will never be in a position to move in any direction without the guidance of our agents set at its head by us as leaders of the mob. The people will submit to this regime because it will know that upon these leaders will depend its earnings, gratifications and the receipt of all kinds of benefits.

I'm in a tech design major with a minor in bio-- I'd like to be a medical illustrator when I grow up. As a result, I have a great deal of knowledge and interest in the relevant areas.

The part played by the liberals, utopian dreamers, will be finally played out when our government is acknowledged. Till such time they will continue to do us good service. Therefore we shall continue to direct their minds to all sorts of vain conceptions of fantastic theories, new and apparently progressive: for have we not with complete success turned the brainless heads of the GOYIM with progress, till there is not among the GOYIM one mind able to perceive that under this word lies a departure from truth in all cases where it is not a question of material inventions, for truth is one, and in it there is no place for progress. Progress, like a fallacious idea, serves to obscure truth so that none may know it except us, the Chosen of God, its guardians.

I like T.M. Lehrman for anthropology; love Buber, Kierkegaard, and Wittgenstein for philosophy; think that some monks did the best they could in regards to preserving 8th+ century european/scandanavian poetry; am indebted to JRR Tolkien for natural-sounding translations of the previous category and his personal contributions towards modern fantasy; and enjoy the New Weird as far as modern genres may go.

...to start on each category, I'd read the Lehrman essay on non-pathological group hallucination, I and Thou for Buber 101, Either/Or for Kierkegaard 101, and Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus for Wittgenstein 101. Don't be scared off by the title of the last one. Tt's straightforward, humorous, and quotable. I'd pick up the Tolkien translation of the Lay of Sigurd and Gudrun for a taste of his translation work, recommend the Silmarillion to bits for all its relentlessly depressing beauty, and choose Kraken by China Mieville for your intro to New Weird. If you don't know much about the New Weird's basis, Lovecraft, I can also help with that.

Had a project in neurally-driven simulated robotic trading back in college. Was decent, but haven't worked on it in recent times though.

Last area of exploration was analyzing the news to attempt to forecast market behavior in general in order to decide whether to play aggressively or cautiously.

I've been trying to find your essays on the side, but I'm having some problems finding the saved pdfs.

I'm trying to just re-google the essays, but it's kind of a mess. I'm trying to find an interesting piece critiquing the layers of quality compression viewing art digitally inherently messes with. There's some asides about the false scarcity of digital reproduction of originally digital art, and how that's messing with modern artists. One artist commented on this by having a single GIF encrypted on a thumb drive. Sold it like an original oil painting. It was a weird article and I wanted to give it to you.

The other one, I found! Torrent this shit. You'll like it. It goes into how art deals with naked people, and why people use the word nude to classify some kinds of naked art. If you want a short rant about why people can't draw other human bodies with half-decent anatomy because of screwy psychological reasons, just ask.

its pretty easy to read tabs. each line represents a string, and the numbers on those lines represent the frets you play. just google search 'how to read tabs' and i'm sure you'll find something that explains it. there's some symbols you'll need to remember, the main ones being bending, hammer ons/pull offs, and sliding. there's a few other symbols but 90% of the time it will be one of those symbols

the problem with tabs is they don't have rhythmic notation, so you can't really write out original music with it, it's good for easily showing how to play a song that you can listen to though.

That reminds me of the robots that trade billions of dollars every second automatically to 'stabilize' the market. I read about how they had this big fight over trying to get a server the closest to the main robot server under wall street, and eventually they just made a bunch of servers and gave everyone an equal cable length so that no one could gain a time advantage over any other company.
The amount of human capital and skill involved just boggles my mind. I dream of making the first A.I to 'feel' things as I think thats the key to building true A.I as its a cornerstone of human memory(you remember stuff when you have a feeling associated with it).

Flash Boys, you're talking about. Isn't that an alternate exchange? Still need to read about that.

But yeah, there's definitely an unfair advantage to be had in the traditional exchange due to network latency.

Powerful AI, imo, boils down to fast (and perhaps inevitably distributed) computing power to back massive hopfield nets.

Deep learning optimizes the learning/convergence process, but ultimately probably may not be as necessary if the time-cost problem is somehow minimized by powerful computing for a conventional deep network.

>java

Not so sure Java will be what we want to use in the future, though it's definitely a "safe" platform.

Used C++ extensively in college distributed computing research.

This is a photo of the earliest known Staunton pattern chess set, the Old No. 8 owned by Sir Alan Fersht. Unfortunately, I do not have higher resolution photos of the set when it was used in a recent exhibition match. There are some other high quality images, but not in such luxurious circumstances.

>>29245168
This particular puzzle is a positioning advantage.

>>29245057
The way that this would be notated is

1. Rd8+ Kg7 (since Kg7 is black's only move)

Quick notation lesson
K=King
R=Rook
Q=Queen
N=Knight
B=Bishop
Horizontal= a-h
Vertical= 1-8
Take a piece= x between the piece symbol and destination (e.g. Rxe5 or gxh5 for a pawn in the g column taking a piece at h5)
Check= + at the end
Checkmate= # at the end

Example
1. Rxg5+ Rg6 2. Rxg6# describes a white rook capturing a piece at g5, putting black in check. Black responds by moving one of their rooks to g6, blocking the enemy white rook. The next turn, as indicated by the "2.", the white rook takes the rook that moved to g6, and this somehow puts black in checkmate.

New puzzle attached. Play as black for some kind of advantage (piece taken, situational, or checkmate)

So being a novice chess player makes you educated and or professional? Seems like you don't belong in your own thread
>>
>>29244996
When you say "solution", do you mean checkmate in one move or just that the next white move will lead to victory? I can't see a way to checkmate in one move. >>29245057's solution isn't checkmate, the black king can move to G7 to escape.
>>
>>29245175
Why should young poor people worry about investment? Because you're young. Time is on your side. At this point you can make a small investment and forget about it, and when you retire you'll be rich. Say you're 20. If you invest $100 every pay check (which is minuscule) and are receiving run-of-the-mill market returns, When you retire, you'll have $1,001,822.56

Say you were to start investing when you were 35. You'd need to deposit almost $350.00 every couple weeks in order to get a million when you retire. The sooner you start, the easier it is, the more money you'll have.
>>
>>29245316
While the king isn't put in checkmate, white can take black's queen the following turn since nothing is protecting it. Huge advantage, even if it doesn't involve a checkmate.

>>
>>29245398
Immersion in a topic is probably the best way to learn it quickly. That said, those crash courses have a weird combination of being condensed enough that they don't have detailed information and being long enough that it's hard to get a high level overview of the subject matter.

I'd look elsewhere. Probably download an advanced textbook on the subject, something that is way above where you're currently at, then use university lectures to learn about specific subtopics that interest you.
>>
>>29245398
I listened to the history (world, US) series while working, but there's limited analysis and was a bit biased in certain ways, but still pretty good.

It's definitely a commendable project, and I've been meaning to check out the other series they offer when I have the chance. I feel compelled to take notes when listening to more detailed topics though, so I tend to put that off until my own time.

self proclaimed genious here
there are courses online but you should dismiss anything that doesnt go beyond surface levels, even the most intensive ones pale in comparison to what actual classes do.
In greece classes where taught with no tests and focused in preparing the student both by teaching the contents and developing a teacher - student bond. We moved from that to an industrial approach where one adult handles 6 classes of kids a day and nobody makes sure children are learning the contents. Now education is being rebranded yet again as prerecorded videos with no interaction.

Since you think that your would be putting white in check, I am assuming that you mean something different from a5, which is around the middle of the far right of the board. I think you meant Rd1+, since that is in the range of motion of the rook and a title away from the king.
If you did, you are correct!

Here's another one. White to move, same deal.
>>
>>29245791
>I forget which philosopher
I heard it associated with Socrates iirc.

Although its probably true, what's the alternative for people without access to great teachers?
Should a man devote his entire life to the pursuit of one branch of knowledge taught by a word-of-mouth or explore all avenues to learn as much as he can about everything by any means available?
Ethically speaking, Is it better to be a specialist or a generalist?
>>
>>29246163
It is more practical to have some knowledge, rather than none. Applied self-study is sufficient. You do not have to be spoon-fed by a mentor, though it helps. A form of group study or accountability helps with pacing.

Becoming a specialist or a generalist is more of an epistemic issue than an ethical one. It's good to have generalized information sorting methods, and then follow up on the prioritized information with intensified study. Prioritize fields of study by practicality, interest, and availability while maintaining a good list of trustworthy sources for everything else
>>

Your notation is still a little off. Correct notation is this:
1. Qf7+ Rxf7 2. exf7#
Remember to take into consideration the orientation of the board; the reason that the numbers were small on the far, opposite end of the board last puzzle is due to the fact that you were playing as black, and black is always starts on 7/8. Since you were playing as white this time, the lower end of the board was row 1.

The attached picture illustrates what I explained above; coordinates depend on which side you're playing/the orientation of the board.

>what's the alternative for people without access to great teachers?
im not proposing an alternative to the current education sistem, im warning you about a threath to the future one, we already see it in the form of quotas, our current society doesnt value capacity and seems to belive innovators are born and not made, i can see the amount of subjects raise and the quality of the education and requirements for a passing grade get lowered in the future wich are not two but three wrongs.
That being said education should be accesible to people at any point in life and learned at your own pace and whenever you want to after middleschool, people get hired not because of education but specialization anyways so that one can be paid only.
There should be as many subjects as there can be but not such a thing as a diploma, driving and office are today more important than any subject save for math. Test by themselves are a good idea but not as a standar, to finish a class test should only be ome of the available options, in school projects and even participation should also be options depending on the subject, all test should be open book but with books the student has never read and with people monitoring them to check they dont read an entire chapter

Spot-on notation this time, and your solution is pretty good. It is not the """""solution""""", but it is just as good and pretty close. What I have is this:
1. Rc8 Rxc8 2. Qh8+ Ke7 3. Rxc8 ...
I believe that the key stops there because, regardless of what black does next, they are at a loss. Taking the rook is the only move that prevents checkmate, though.

That was the most difficult puzzle that I currently have on my computer. I do have more on my phone, though, and I will transfer them over very soon.

I'm a little shaky on this one.

1. Ra6 Qe7
2. Qb7 ??? (I'm not sure what a response could be)
3. Nf6+?! Rxf6
4. Rxf6 ...
There's 2 moves that could be made here?

4. ...Nxf6
5. Qxe7! ... At this point you've won the Q+R for N+R. Not a bad trade.

or:

4. ...Qxf6
5. Qxd6+ ...

Even trade but forces Black into a bad position since you end up putting him into check at the end.

I'm probably completely off the mark, but at least I explained my logic?!

Who cares if you're any good or not? You're making an attempt to learn; there's no fault in that.
First set of moves is good, but everything else is not.
It should be a red flag that you don't know how they would respond; ideally, your moves should be deliberate, purposefully prompting some sort of clearly identifiable response.
Also, your answer is only one of two acceptable responses in the key, and the second, in my opinion, leads to a better outcome.
Small hint: This puzzle does not take very many moves; the exact number ranges from 2-4 so you should be able to find an acceptable answer without doing too much work.

Southern culture is inherently more sensationalist, and hybridized with urban sensibilities and general cultural decay from the post-Johnsonian welfare state it's a bit of a fierce feedback loop, and a race to the bottom.

With that said, ask an old country black person what black culture is, and then ask a 20yo urban black person. You'll get radically different answers.

Never heard of it. Based on Wikipedia it seems you may need to focus on verbal, which is no walk in the park. Reading lengthy detailed passages and answering questions based on them, and of course certain dictionary vocal style tests. Like the old school SAT on steroids.

The quantitative test is pretty easy, like the SAT except with a bit of trig and the like if I recall.

This was like four years ago though. In either case, take a GRE prep test if need be to get a feel for what to expect.

Also, if you don't know cursive, practice a bit. You have to copy a long statement promising not to reveal test questions or something.

>the absurd
If you're using "absurd" as a proper noun it should be capitalized e.g. "as it keeps my head off of the Absurd".
>Perhaps "work" would fit

"Uncouth, and downright..." would still command plenty of attention from the reader.
