One, equal pay isn't idea. The idea is fair pay for labor. A doctor will earn more because his labor is worth more and he had to put in more time and effort to become a doctor than a construction worker did to become a construction worker.
That is also the motivation for not just living off the minimum for survival. Many people will still want luxuries, like a house bigger than 1 bedroom 1 bathroom, or more indulgent food, or a nicer car, etc.

Like I said, the only people who would be leeches are those who are okay with living with the barest minimums of housing and food. The housing and food is paid for with the minimum the government distributes to those who don't already make the minimum through their labor. The minimum comes from the central repository of wealth that is paid into rather than money going directly to workers. From that repository, all workers are paid according to the value of their labor, after making sure everyone will have the minimum.

Communism is a stage which we will progressively drift into as more and more people become unemployable due to increasing automation and efficiency. Eventually the cost of living will become low enough to let everyone have the basics necessary for surviving and employment will become purely voluntary (instead of inherently mandatory like it is under libertarian capitalism)

The problem is that you're considered able-bodied until you can prove otherwise. The disability process is quite long and difficult, so you could go months without getting the welfare you deserve because you struggle to prove that you're disabled. Especially with mental disorders, you're going to have a hard time proving you're not able-bodied.
