This seems to be a general trend in America, or at least that's my perception. In contrast to my home country coffee are rarely drunk black and bitter, beer is watery and light and spirits are usually drank diluted with soft some kind of soft drink to make them more easily drunk.

I'm a Eastern European living in Western Europe. I often go to bars by myself in the hopes of meeting someone, a friend or a potential gf, but it hasn't happened in three years.
Anyways, i try to go to different bars every evening and i order three shots of vodka and one strong brown beer. Ethanol burns your throat, not the left behind parts from fermentation. If you pour ethanol on an open wound, it'll burn there too, even if it's medical grade and extremely pure.
