I recently got a dog as well. Though, all she's really done so far is chew on things and blast shit everywhere. At least she's cute when she's sleeping.

dogs will play with anything. if you have a rag lying around just drag it along the ground and your dog will probably chase it. mine used to take a rag with it everywhere it went like a baby with a blanket.

Buy it a few toys, then. I'd recommend a ball or two, a rope to play tug-of-war with and maybe a dog bone or something.
Dogs really like grapes apparently. The sweetness makes them really excited afterwards, kinda like when you feed it a treat.

I live in Virginia and there's an organization here that allows you to adopt a Golden Retriever for free (after multiple interviews and paperwork and blah blah blah). They pay for all medical expenses and can even reimburse you for food. The only downsides are probably that the process can be a bitch to get through, the dog may or may not have been abused so it may be skiddish, and you'll probably want to seppuku when it eventually dies.
I'm probably going to try and adopt one when I move in a few weeks; finally moving into a house and not an apartment, so that means pet time. Yay!

Snuggle, give dog structure, mold dog into dog you want. Don't blame others when dog doesn't listen or does bad things, that's going to be all your fault.
Don't ingrain bad behaviors and be wary when you give praise, you have to do that in context or the moment is lost.
If you don't have any experience with dog training you can also go to a doggy school.
Take care of your dog, and don't let it run off the leash and play in the streets without accepting the fact it might get run over or bite someone that will sue you...

Top notch pupper OP! Don't take people on here's advice about what to feed dogs, sometimes the things that are bad/poisonous for them are quite surprising and you wouldnt suspect. Look up a proper veterinary website to find out what people food you can give your pupper
