Or you could just add O-rings and get quieter switches. The reason mechanical keyboards are good is because of their tactile feel and keypress. There are tons of different switches that feel, press, sound and respond differently. They also have far better keycap quality and build quality than membrane keyboards, and are fully replacable.

Who are you quoting? Of course everyone can tell when they've pressed a key down, the idea is WHERE the actuation point is. Some switches have less resistence so the actuation point requires far less of a physical push to send the signal. Some switches, like mine (mx blues) have a very heavy switch that has a tactile and obvious on/off point. Some people hate one switch and swear by another, they're all different.
Membrane gives you no choice whatsoever and also has the added annoyance of little to no resistence before the actuation point so just the lightest of touch can accidently trigger a key. When you're typing pages at a time it can become very annoying and makes it near impossible to type at optimal speeds achievable with your preferred mechanical switch.
