I started going there because I was starved for more 2hus content back when I first found out about it. I used to lurk a lot more frequently trying to catch anything I hadn't seen/heard yet, but recently I can't bother to sift through all of the cancerous "Which 2hu would you fug" and "I want to X Y's Z!" threads that dominate the board.
As for your question, I'd say it's because /jp/, /a/, etc. is where you go for escapism, and /r9k/ is where you go when you have to come back to Earth.
