I am not so full of myself that I'd say I'm brilliant, but I do know that if my depression wasn't a thing, I'd be way more productive. My problem is anxiety more than depression though, I'd argue. I get by though. My depression isn't really "I'm sad" more like "everything seems so far out of reach".

I've known a few people like that, that try to subtly inform everyone how intelligent they are. They're not that smart. It's a front they put on because they are in fact insecure about their average or even below average intelligence.
I think this happens because when you're more "intelligent", or at least under the impression you are, you get more trapped in your head. Blue-collar Joe Schmoe doesn't get up and ponder endlessly, "Wait, am I sure I can do this? Where is my life going? Will there ever be any end to this?" He just gets out of bed and goes to his shitty job, without needing to question things very much. Same story for Sarah Smileyfucker (she's Irish, okay?). Y'know the HR lady that's way too happy, has to be on smack or something. She's all glazed-eyed and angry when she walks in, but once she drinks some foul discount coffee in the rec room she's smiling ear-to-ear. After that, she just schmoozes with the other HR girls and fucks around with spreadsheets without one care.

There is a very pronounced historical trend among highly creative people and mental illnesses such as depression. I know a lot of people are extremely intimidated when it comes to creative intelligence, in particular when it comes to things like language, but it is nothing short of contrary to make sweeping judgements about something which is actually evident.
The problem is that people seem to think that descriptors such as "intelligent" and "brilliant" are black and white statements insinuating a constant state of mind. That isn't how the brain works.
